[Non-halal] For some reason, the best tasting pastas are often not the most good-looking. (See: Padella)
This is particularly true for a’Roma Dinings – a neighborhood Italian joint in Paramount Garden, PJ. Nonetheless, it is still our favourite place for authentic, handmade pasta dishes – these are freshly made from Italian Semolina flour and free-range kampung eggs. Think authentic, al-dente pasta lusciously coated with sauce.
Burrata
For this particular visit, we shared three pasta dishes and Burrata (fresh Italian cow milk cheese). The burrata was a nice starter – nice soft bouncy texture with a mild buttery taste accompanied by Parma ham and zucchini.
Pasta in order of preference:
Bucatini alla Puttanesca
1. Bucatini alla Puttanesca (RM40) – Tomato-based sauces is where a’Roma excels! The bucatini was the perfect pasta to absorb all the loveliness of the puttanesca sauce. Rich, savoury and full of umami – the chef must have been generous with the garlic, capers, olives and anchovies.
Spaghettini Alla Carbonara con Guanciale
2. Spaghettini Alla Carbonara con Guanciale (RM46) – We really enjoy their rendition of carbonara made with fresh kampung eggs, pecorino cheese and truffle oil. It’s rare to find carbonara served locally with guanciale (home-cured pork cheeks) – the one here is charred but oh so yummy.
Pappardelle Ai Confit Di Anatra
3. Pappardelle Ai Confit Di Anatra (RM40) – The pappardelle served here is curly with a slightly tangy flavour profile with strings of duck confit. Tasty but not our favourite of the lot.
Reservations recommended as it can get quite busy on weekends.
