Aunty Peggy’s Ais Kacang
[Pork-free] Aunty Peggy’s Ais Kacang in Old Town PJ is an establishment.
Guys, it’s official! El Nino is here. I don’t know about you – but the weather has been so erratic these days.
Searing hot sun at noon before heavy downpours in the evening makes it hard to plan one’s day.
The hot weather just made us crave a good cold dessert – so we visited Aunty Peggy’s Classic Ais Kacang to help cool off.
Aunty Peggy’s Ais Kacang in Old Town PJ
Aunty Peggy’s Ais Kacang is located inside the Taman Selera Food Court in Old Town PJ – and just next to the wet market.
There are a few ais kacang (or ABC) stalls inside this food stall – but one just needs to look out for stall No. 46 with the big and colourful signboard bearing Aunty Peggy’s name.
Previously known as Gerai Minum Weng Kee, this ABC stall has been operating for decades and is currently run by Aunty Peggy Chee, her hubby, and son.
When Ming was working in the area, she used to frequent this Medan Selera with her colleagues. We still frequent the stall regularly with our mom – and the quality remained consistently good.
Aunty Peggy’s Ais Kacang is an establishment
Aunty Peggy offers a number of classic shaved ice desserts here.
Apart from the Classic Ais Kacang, the stall also serves Ais Kacang with mixed sugar (rose syrup and gula Melaka), Cendol in a cup, Bobo Cha Cha, and Pink Lady.
Nevertheless, the Classic Ais Kacang is arguably the most popular order here.
There is also an “off-menu” item that Ming (and some regulars) like to order which is Ais Kacang with only red beans. More on this below.
Classic Ais Kacang
The Classic Ais Kacang (RM4) is as good as we remembered it to be.
Each bowl comes with red beans, grass jelly, sweet corn, peanuts, coconut milk, evaporated milk, cendol jelly, and the quintessential Gula Melaka.
What we like about Aunt Peggy’s ais kacang (that differentiates it from others) is the addition of evaporated milk. The milk adds soft creaminess to the dessert and provides a nice balance to the gula Melaka and coconut milk.
Hence, the Ais Kacang is very balanced (not too sweet, not too diluted) with just the right hit of caramel fragrance from the Gula Melaka, and creaminess from the two milk used.
We also like that the peanuts are slightly roasted, and the red beans are slightly mushy for some textural variances.
Ais Kacang with only red beans
A favourite order for Ming (and other regulars) is Ais Kacang with only red beans (RM4).
As mentioned above, Aunty Peggy’s red beans are boiled down to yield a lovely mushiness that goes really well with the Gula Melaka and coconut milk.
If you’re a fan of red beans – do try this variation.
What else to order here?
If you’re coming here for a full meal, we recommend Gerai Seong Kee (stall no. 35) for yong tau foo, and Gerai Makanan Kie Kee (stall no. 41) for the chicken rice.
The former serves one of the softest white tofu in PJ, and each YTF piece is made fresh to order. The latter’s chicken rice is quite good although the portion is small.
The Indian rice stall in this Medan Selera is quite popular too.
We’ll do a post on these stalls in the near future.
Summary
If you’re looking for a really good traditional bowl of ais kacang – we can’t recommend Aunty Peggy enough.
Do note that the stall can get quite busy on weekends and public holidays.
Also note that the queue is only for takeaways, and you’ll just need to flag them at your table if you’re dining in.
RECOMMENDED!
