[Pork-free] Opened by neighbors who share the same passion for baking, the aptly-named Baker Next Door is the newest cafe in Waterfront, Desa ParkCity.
Baker Next Door
What started as a home-based operation by a few friends, Baker Next Door now offers pretty pies and rustic sourdough bread in a minimalist cafe.
Black Pinky in the area
Upon recommendation, we tried the top-selling Black Pinky (RM35) – its availability is dependent on whether cherries are in season.
Unfortunately, we thought the pie did not justify the price. While it looked pretty in (black)pink, we thought the Oreo-black sesame crust was a bit too hard and normal-tasting for us. We also wished there were more dimensions to its tasting profile.
The cherries and blackberry were fresh – however, we weren’t blown away by the whole ensemble, which include pink cream cheese filling and black cocoa crumble.
A different take on Kaya Toast
However, we found ourselves enjoying the Torched Sea Salt French Butter Kaya (RM10). The taste was complex with hints of tanginess from the sourdough and a touch of sea salt to add to the usual kaya toast ensemble.
However, it did get a bit rich (jelak) after a while – so it goes best with a cup of warm Long Black, in our view.
Baker Next Door does have its fan base, and their other pie selections are intriguing – but this is just our take on it.
