Big Family Restaurant, SS15
[Non-halal] Located in the ever-busy SS15 commercial area in Subang Jaya, Big Family Restaurant is a popular cha sat/kopitiam among locals.
This kopitiam occupies three shoplots and we liked that it also has a big air-conditioned dining area.
The kopitiam houses quite a good variety of stalls, including a Penang White Curry (with duck blood) that originated from Burmah Road in Penang.
Ipoh Hor Fun at Big Family Restaurant
The Ipoh Shredded Chicken Hor Fun stall was recommended here, so we decided to get a bowl of noodles with shredded chicken, prawn wontons, and prawn (RM13).
The broth here relies less on prawn oil, with a more prominent chicken-based flavour to give it a sweeter touch. We do like our hor fun to have a stronger prawn oil flavour – but these should please those who like a lighter taste.
While the prawns and wontons were decent, we wouldn’t really come back here for this dish.
Ipoh Curry Mee
Among all the iterations of curry mee in Malaysia, the Ipoh-style topped with siew yoke is our favourite.
The one here is actually decent. For RM12, the Curry Mee came with a generous amount of siew yoke, pig skin, long beans and tofu puffs.
While the curry mee is not really authentically Ipoh (which tends to have a bit more santan), the one here does hit the spot as the broth has a good rempah (spice) hit.
It’s not overtly spicy (as in packing too many chillies) so it was actually quite easy to slurp on its own.
We definitely recommend enjoying this with a cup of Kopi Ais, which we thought was quite fragrant and kaw.
Summary
Overall, we thought Big Family Restaurant is a decent spot in SS15 that offers a good variety of Chinese hawker dishes.
