Breizh KL
[Non-halal] Brace yourself for a delicious good time with French crêpes and savoury galettes at Breizh KL.
Newly opened for only a few days, this new café in Damansara Kim takes inspiration from the authentic crêperies that outnumber cafes in the Brittany region of France.
It’s in the name, after all. Breizh (pronounced brays) is the Breton name for Brittany – the peninsula that sits at the Northwest of France, and home of the famous crepes and galettes (pancakes made from buckwheat flour, water and salt).
So does Breizh KL live up to expectations? Read on to find out.
Breizh KL in Damansara Kim
Newly opened in March, a step into the establishment is like a step into a local French creperie. We love the French-inspired interior with the retro tiles and rattan chairs adorned in the national colours of blue, white and red.
The coziness of the cafe is only matched by the warmness of service. On our two visits, we were wonderfully attended by Michelle and her able team.
Michelle was a joy as she meticulously explained all the different crêpes and galettes offered here, and what makes them so special and differentiated.
Em-Breizh the love for crêpes and galettes
With a cursory glance at the menu, one can deduce that Breizh only serves two types of dishes – crêpes and galettes.
So what sets the two apart? Crêpes are pancakes topped with sweet condiments such as chocolate, cinnamon stewed apple and fresh fruits. Galettes, on the other hand, are savoury and made with gluten-free buckwheat flour.
A testament to the chef’s adherence to tradition, Breizh uses only French T55 flour for the crêpes, and 100% organic French buckwheat flour for the galettes.
There are a total of nine crêpe and nine galette dishes on the menu.
Find traditional crêpes and more
Traditional rêpes on the menu include the Classic (RM11) combo of lemon, sugar and butter; La Pomme (RM18) which features stewed apples with cinnamon and whipped cream; and Mont Blanc (RM21) showcasing chestnut cream and vanilla ice-cream.
However, what piqued our interest the most here were the special offerings of Berries (RM27) – which features homemade berry compote, vanilla ice-cream, strawberries, blueberries and pistachios; and the Tiramisu (RM23) which has mascarpone espresso encased in a crêpe log.
Berries crêpe
On two separate occasions, we tried the Berries (RM27) and Chocolate Fraise (RM27).
The former was our preferred crêpe. Strawberries and blueberries on a pancake is a no-brainer, but the pistachios added a nice nutty punch. The berry compote was a nice complement as it was not too sweet (Chinese speak for good), and it went well with the vanilla scoop.
And yes – the crêpe was also executed well. As it was freshly made, it had a nice texture and was served warm. No cardboard dry parts at all.
Chocolate Fraise crêpe
The Chocolate Fraise is the more ordinary-looking crêpe of the two we tried.
While the combo seems typical – we like that Breizh opted for premium strawberries from its suppliers, which do not induce any “puckered lips” when eaten. This means that the strawberries were delightfully sweet and not a sour-bomb surprise.
The hazelnut chocolate sauce is also made from scratch with none of that Nutella crap. We did wish it had more chocolate sauce though.
Going ga-ga for galettes
As delightful as the crêpes were, the galettes were the real standouts for us.
Grilled prawns, mixed greens, feta, walnuts, and balsamic glaze are the parts that make up the Crevettes (RM34). This was delicious!
The chef has a way with seafood, as the five prawns were wonderfully marinated, and cooked perfectly for a plump and succulent finish. They were a good size too. The crustaceans were served on a bed of a buttery sauce, and beautifully complemented by feta, walnuts and balsamic glaze.
The Saint Jacques (RM39) is another showcase of the chef’s mastery of seafood. The three pan-seared scallops again were seasoned well, juicy and plump. Bacon is always a good idea, but these strips were done extra-well with a hint of smokiness to it, and not overly fried to crisp.
The leek fondue provides the buttery, cheesy touch. And yes, the galette on its own was cooked well with a hint of nuttiness from the buckwheat flour.
Summary
We enjoyed our meals here, with a slight preference for the galettes over the sweet crêpes. The idea is to get a galette each with a sweet crêpe to share. We have earmarked the Ragu (Confit Pork Belly Slow-cooked in tomato and red wine) as the next dish to try, and will return soon. They also serve excellent coffee.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
