[Pork-free] Hey, how you brewin’?
Brew 9 offers cold brew, hot food and desserts from a home cafe in Kota Kemuning, Selangor.
The idea for Brew 9 began when its owner Mirshal moved to Brunei (hehe, geddit?) four years ago and began selling cold brew to foster friendships and make an honest living.
When she returned to KL, she continued to sell her offerings in pop-up stalls before setting up a cozy cafe in her home.
Mirshal was kind enough to send us a selection of her best-selling cold brews, and some yummy food and cakes to go with ’em.
Black Cold Brew
Being a #coffeehead, Max absolutely enjoyed the Black Cold Brew. It was smooth, delicate and fruity without being too acidic.
Cascara Love the deep amber colour
However, his favourite discovery has to be the Cascara. Made from the dried skin of coffee cherries, Cascara is a much, much milder brew and has more tea-like qualities than coffee.
Its deep amber colour reminded us of rooibos tea, with an aroma similar to red dates. Tastewise, it was tangy with a tea-like sweetness. Lovely!
Smooth, thick and mildly sweet
Made from dark cocoa, cane sugar and sea salt, Brew 9’s Steeped Chocolate was smooth, thick and slightly sweet.
Hojicha
We also enjoyed the Hojicha Cold Brew – mildly sweet, creamy with a hint of its roasted qualities. Four cold brew bottles for RM40 (part of their MCO special deal) is good value, in our opinion.
Sambal chicken Sweet and mildly spicy sambal
We really enjoyed the Nasi Lemak (RM12), which was well-prepared by Mirshal’s mom and perfect for those who can’t take overly spicy food.
The dish is cooked using fresh ingredients such as Pooni rice (less starchy), kampung egg, homemade sambal and pandan leaves from the neighborhood.
The rice was fragrant with enough “lemak”, while the sambal was mildly sweet. The accompanying chicken sambal was flavourful and tender.
Sourdough set
The Sourdough Set (RM10.80) was also a good value with two slices of sourdough toasted with garlic butter. It went well with the soft egg omelette.
Key lime pie The tartness were perfectly balanced by the cream and crust
For dessert, we went for the Key Lime Pie (RM14) and Choc Walnut Banana Loaf (RM10). Ming really enjoyed the former – the sharp tang was perfectly balanced by the cream and the crust. This goes well in combination with the black coffee.
Chocolate Walnut Banana Loaf
The chocolate walnut banana loaf was moist and not very sweet, with nice bits of melted dark chocolate and banana bits.
We wanted to try the Pandan layer cake (our fav cake!) – but it was out of stock on our delivery day. We did, however, learn that the pandan layer cake is baked by her neighbour – making it a neighbourhood affair.
After operating for more than a year, Mirshal is now crowdfunding to open a cafe (her front porch has limited space after all) in a shop lot that’s only a stone’s throw away from her home.
Do check out her story on her website here. Brew 9’s food and drinks are available for delivery as well via a few platforms – check out her Instagram for more details. We wish her all the best!
