Cheevit Cheeva PJ
[Pork-free] Thailand’s famous dessert chain, Cheevit Cheeva has landed in PJ.
We are lovers of shaved ice dessert – so we were quite excited to check out the new outlet in Damansara Utama.
Our first attempt to visit the store in Heritage Row was met with disappointment as most of the desserts were already sold out.
On a Saturday morning, we managed to get a spot here albeit there was a queue ahead of us.
Unfortunately, we did not enjoy the desserts here at all.
Cheevit Cheeva in Damansara Utama
First opened in 2015, Cheevit Cheeva is a Thai-based dessert franchise that specialises in Korean bingsu (shaved ice), cheesecake and toast.
The franchise expanded into KL with its first branch in Heritage Row in July, before opening its second branch in PJ the following month.
Cheevit Cheeva incorporates local flavours into its desserts, with bestsellers such as the Shokupan Thai Tea Sang-Ka-Ya Bingsu (RM26 for small), Salty Egg Yolk Bua-Loi Bingsu (RM27 for small), and Mango Sticky Rice Bingsu (RM26).
This new branch in PJ is very popular, as we see a perpetual crowd in front of the shop everytime we pass by the area.
We love bingsu (our favourite spots include Sulbing, Binq and Aftermeal Dessert – see our reviews in the posts below) – so we were really keen to check this place out.
However – we did not enjoy the desserts here.
Shokupan Thai Tea Sang-ka-ya was too sweet
Listed as one of the bestsellers, we decided to try the Shokupan Thai Tea Sang-ka-ya Bingsu.
Cheevit Cheeva offers two sizes for each dessert – but the small at RM26 is not big enough to share for two, so it only made sense to order the big for RM34. However, we just couldn’t finish the dessert.
While it looked pretty, we found the dessert too sweet for us and the elements lacked congruity.
The base shaved ice had the requisite soft and snowy texture, but the bread cubes were just so weird. It was neither toasty nor crispy and tended to become mushy with the ice. The shaved thai tea was just too sweet for us.
The santan also lacked fragrance, and the kaya jam was somewhat flat-tasting despite being very sweet.
Overall – all of the elements were dialled up to 11 in terms of sweetness, but lacked any individual flavours.
This was the first bingsu that we couldn’t finish.
Despite the waiter telling us the Boba and Royal Thai Milk Tea (RM15) is not sweet – it was again turned to the 11 in terms of sweetness.
Summary
We know that people will still make a beeline for Cheeva Cheevit, but this place is just not for us.
We’ll stick to our favourite shaved iced desserts at Binq, Aftermeal and Sulbing.
NOT RECOMMENDED.
