[Halal] Our hunt for the best Sarawak laksa in KL continues at Dayang Sarawak Corner.
We settled for the branch at StarParc, Setapak (geddit?) coz it’s open air and we were able to physically distance ourselves from other patrons.
Sarawak laksa biasa
I opted for the Sarawak Laksa Biasa (RM7.50), which comes with the usual – bihun, egg strips, taugeh and two prawns. Kalau nak tambah isi, the Special is available for extra RM2.
My benchmark for Sarawak laksa in KL is Aunt Christina (non-halal) as the ones I had in Kuching don’t count.
At first taste, Dayang’s broth is slightly on the creamier side (a bit more santan than usual). However, as I continued digging into the bowl – the spices from the paste become more apparent and blended well with the santan. So, overall – quite a nice bowl of noodles, as I eventually sapu-ed the whole thing down to the last drop. Noodles were al-dente but one of the prawns was slightly mushy.
Kolo mee
The Kolo Mee (RM7.50) here is one of the better ones I’ve tried in KL – the noodles were springy (with texture close to the ones in Sarawak) with enough oil and seasoning. For whatever reason, the kolo mee in KL tend to be very dry but this was moist, as it should be.
According to my Sarawakian buddy, there is really no fixed template laksa/kolo mee in Sarawak. I agree, as the best kolo mee I had in Kuching was one topped with fried chicken instead of the usual char siew or beef.
Nasi goreng dabai
Nasi Goreng Dabai and Nasi Goreng Corned Beef (RM8 each) has wok hei – but it can err on the side of being overburnt. A fruit native to Borneo, dabai is similar to olives; the kitchen here uses a paste instead of the fresh fruits.
Nasi goreng corned beef
Both the olive and corned beef are naturally salty – so the fried rice here is just the base. The sambal on the side helps to temper the saltiness.
There are a few branches of Dayang Sarawak in the Klang Valley – so do check out the branch closest to you.
