[Muslim-friendly] If you are staying in Desaru, Johor, we highly recommend checking out Desaru Seafood Corner.
This was our favourite meal from our recent Johor trip. The seafood here was among the best we’ve eaten.
The crab and fish we ate were not only fresh, they were prepared well in their respective styles.
Desaru Seafood Corner
If you are staying in any of the resorts in Desaru, we highly recommend checking out Desaru Seafood Restaurant.
Desaru Seafood Corner in Desaru town
This Chinese seafood restaurant is located in Desaru town centre – which was only a 10-minute drive away from our hotel.
The seafood here was not only fresh, they were also cheaper than the ones we had at the resort we stayed in.
A Muslim-friendly restaurant
Desaru Seafood Corner is a Muslim-friendly restaurant as it does not serve any pork or lard.
In fact, there were a few tables occupied by Muslim patrons who chose to break fast here during the fasting month.
Fresh seafood on display
Occupying five shoplots, the restaurant is brightly lit, clean and spacious.
As with most seafood restaurants, there are numerous tanks at the premise showcasing all the fresh seafood which can be consumed.
The highlights here had to be the huge mud crabs, lobsters, and freshwater prawns. You are able to point out the exact crustaceans you would like the chef to cook for your dinner.
Signature volcanic crab sauce
The mud crabs here are sold at RM170 per kg – which we deem to be reasonable.
The crabs can be prepared in various styles such as Chilli Crab or Kam Heong – but we settled for their signature Volcanic Crab sauce.
The Volcanic crab sauce turns out to be a slightly spicy version of Nyonya sauce. We enjoyed the gravy very much. It was thick and creamy with a generous use of lemongrass and turmeric.
The gravy had just enough heat to complement the natural sweetness of the fresh crabs. It was also made for a perfect dip for the fried mantous.
Very good fried mantous
Speaking of Mantous, the buns here were excellent. They were fried to perfection with brown, crispy skin but they remained warm and fluffy inside.
They were affordable too at only RM1.50 per piece.
Superbly fresh crabs
Finally, let’s talk about the crabs. The 700g crab that we had was one of the tastiest and freshest we’ve had in recent memory.
The claws were super huge and were the size of Ming’s hand.
More importantly, they were fresh as we could taste the natural sweetness of the flesh.
Our favourite part was sucking out the natural juices from the claw after breaking it apart with the metal pincher.
Cantonese steamed siakap
We also thoroughly enjoyed the Steamed Siakap (barramundi) which we opted to be cooked in the Cantonese-style. Quoted at RM130/kg, our 600g fish steak amounted to RM78.
Despite using the middle part, the fish steaks were tender and not overcooked at all.
They were also fresh too with no “fishy” taste at all.
The soy sauce mix for their Cantonese-style gravy is on the sweeter side (more use of rock sugar), with good embellishments from fried shallots and spring onion.
We actually enjoyed the sweetness (vs. the more saltier versions for some recipes) as it helps to lighten the palate to contrast the heaviness of the crab sauce.
Stir-fry spinach
Finally, the Stir-fry Spinach with Garlic (RM16) was also well executed well as it was not oily, with a generous amount of garlic.
Verdict
Overall, we really enjoyed our dinner here at Desaru Seafood Corner. The seafood was cooked to perfection to highlight their freshness. We thought all of the dishes we ordered were stellar.
A friend who visited this restaurant a few days after also enjoyed the food here.
If you’re staying at any of the resorts in Desaru, we recommend checking this place out for fresh seafood that’s done well.
