Floccus Floccus

Floccus Floccus in KL

[Non-halal] Floccus Floccus 福粿 is a new cafe in Chinatown KL that offers traditional Chinese kuihs in modern skins.

Find chai kuihs shaped like gold-fishes, and kueh lapis intricately made to look like sio bak.

We visited this spot twice already – and are happy to report that the kuihs don’t just look amazing.

They were actually quite tasty, although there were some misses, in our books.

Newly opened in May, Floccus Floccus 福粿 is located above Fung Wong Biscuit (see our review here) on Jalan Sultan.

To access the cafe, take the stairs next to Fung Wong and look for the door with the cute angku kuih door knob.

Old kuihs in new skin

Before moving into this permanent spot, Floccus Floccus actually started as a home business during the pandemic.

Floccus Floccus is the brainchild of 24-year-old Yeoh Hooi Hoon, who was an interior design student then. She decided to actualise her digital 3D drawings of kuihs into reality.

With her equal love for baking and help from family, she then launched Floccus Floccus in 2021 by offering traditional kuihs shaped like fishes and nigiri sushi.

The kuihs were already an online hit then – but the move into this space with a bigger commercial kitchen is definitely an upgrade for Hooi Hoon and her team.

Charming goldfish chai kuih

Floccus Floccus

We visited Floccus Floccus twice in the past month and are happy to report that the delicacies taste as good as they look.

The most visually-striking offering here at Floccus Floccus has to be the Kingu Chai Kuih (RM15 for a set of three).

Floccus Floccus

A Teochew delicacy, the chai kuih are filled with a generous amount of sengkuang (jicama) and shaped into cute gold fishes.

We enjoyed this as the skin was actually quite thin and well-done, and the filling was nicely seasoned with a good savoury kick. The accompanying chilli was good too.

Sushi Angku Kuih

Floccus Floccus

The Sushi Angku Kuih (RM10 for two pieces) is the other signature dish here.

We ordered the ones that looked like salmon nigiri sushi – which contained traditional mung bean paste, and tamago sushi – which contained shredded coconut with Gula Melaka.

The flavours and texture were spot on. The skin was chewy and bouncy, and the mung bean paste had the right balance of sweetness and savouriness. The coconut filling was fragrant with enough Gula Melaka hit.

While the Traditional Angku Kuih (RM10) may look ordinary, they contained unique fillings such as earl grey.

A unique take on Kuih Pulut Tai Tai

Floccus Floccus

The other dish that we really like here is the Earth Set (RM12) which is their unique take on traditional Kuih Pulut Tai Tai (glutinous rice topped with kaya jam).

Floccus Floccus

Here the kuih are shaped like balls on a stick. While the rice balls tasted good – the highlight of this dish was definitely the homemade kaya jam.

Made with duck eggs, the kaya was really fragrant with dark and strong caramelised smoky undertones. So good!

The yam cake surprised us

The Steamed Yam Cake aka Orh Kuih (RM8) really surprised us.

We did not have any high expectations for the dish, but the yam cake was actually filled with lots of diced yam bits and not overtly filled with flour. It was adequately seasoned as well and topped with chillies, sesame and spring onion.

The not so great – Teddy Siew Bao and Stone Lion

Floccus Floccus

We are less enthused about the pastries here – which include the Teddy Siew Bao (RM6). While it looked cute, we thought the filling was pretty ordinary and the pastry skin was a bit too hard on some parts.

Floccus Floccus

The Stone Lion (RM8) was the biggest disappointment for us. Made with kopi O jelly, we found the bitterness too strong and hard to swallow. The condensed milk did not help at all.

Floccus Floccus

They also have unique drink offerings here such as Korange Soda (RM14) and Grass (RM13) – which are combinations of Chinese traditional drinks and new flavours.

Summary

Floccus Floccus

Sometimes the modern take on traditional dishes doesn’t work – but we think Floccus Floccus really hit it off with their modern versions of kuihs.

Floccus Floccus

We really enjoyed most of the dishes here, and think prices are quite reasonable for the flavours, creativity and execution. We’ll be happy to bring friends here.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
