[Pork-free, lard-free] Foon Yew Laksa offers more than 30 toppings to add to your curry mee.
Foon Yew Laksa in Taman Stulang, Johor is one of the more popular curry mee stalls in Johor.
In fact, this stall came highly recommended during our trip to Johor Bahru.
Foon Yew Laksa
Foon Yew Laksa operates out of a stall at Stulang Walk, Jalan Stulang Laut. The place is clean with plenty of tables set up around the premises for pleasant al-fresco dining under tents and trees.
Foon Yew offers 30 toppings to your noodles
Foon Yew offers over 30 toppings – such as young tau foo (vegetables stuffed with meat filling), fried tofu, fish balls, quill egg, and fresh seafood – that you can add to your noodles.
The seafood available on that day – prawns, squid, clams, and oysters – looked fresh.
Foon Yew offers both dry and clear soup noodles – but the popular choice has to be their curry broth.
Noodles in curry broth
Max’s bowl of curry noodles came up to RM16. This was actually quite reasonable as he added a lot of toppings including a fresh prawn (RM3) and at least nine pieces of fish balls and tofu.
We definitely enjoyed the broth. While we found the broth to rich in coconut milk (santan), it still had a nice spicy kick with enough umami from the spices. The soup is also cooked with chicken stock as the base – which gives it a bit of depth.
Each table comes equipped with a bowl of sambal chilli, which you can add to your noodles to your heart’s content. We found the sambal to be sweet with a good belacan hit. It does the job well to enrich the bowl of noodles.
Clear soup, fresh prawns
As for the noodles soup version, we found the broth to be decent. However, we do prefer the curry broth.
As for the toppings, the prawn was very fresh and cooked just perfectly. We also enjoyed their homemade fish balls very much as it had a nice bouncy texture, with plenty of fish taste.
The stuffed tofu pieces were also decent with plenty of fillings.
Summary
Overall, we definitely recommend checking this spot if you’re looking for a good bowl of curry mee in Johor Bahru.
We enjoyed the variety of toppings and the aromatic curry broth.
Note that it can be pretty busy during lunchtime and especially on the weekends, as we waited about 30 minutes for our orders to arrive. Hence, please plan accordingly.
