[Pork-free] For a date night with a view of the sunset, check out Fuego at Troika Sky Dining.
The spot is also the perfect place for a casual catch-up with friends – as it provides a view of the sun descending behind KL Tower and Petronas Twin Towers.
Although Fuego at Troika Sky Dining has been open since 2014, we only paid our first visit to the restaurant/bar last month. And we enjoyed the experience.
Read on to find out more.
Fuego at Troika Sky Dining
Named after the Spanish word for ‘fire’, Fuego is one of six restaurants/bars operating on Level 23A of The Troika, a stunning building designed by architect Norman Foster.
Fuego, in particular, focuses on South American cuisine with smoked and grilled meats as the main method of cooking – while serving up guacamole, ceviches, tacos, and other tapas on the side.
Find ceviches (raw fish cooked by the acidity of lemon and lime) served with barramundi, yuzu, wasabi, and shiso gremolata.
Guacamoles are a speciality here (just as it should be in a South American joint) with a dedicated team of guacamole chefs dishing out the avocado-based entries all night!
Apart from the classic iteration (avocado, chilli, cilantro), there are also renditions that incorporate smoked eel, capers, and even cili padi!
For mains, the grilled meats share the spotlight with striploin, rib-eye, lamb and Angus back ribs served in big plates to share for 2-3 pax.
Fuego – dining with a view
Food aside, the venue is obviously the key selling point of Fuego.
The restaurant is located on the far side of Troika that is closest to the KLCC park, which provides a breathtaking view of the resplendent sun setting over the KL skyline.
Compared to other establishments operating on that floor, Feugo offers a more casual vibe with al-fresco dining on an open balcony – offering a panoramic view of the KL Twin Towers.
Fuego – take the first slot for the sunset
Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Fuego now offers dinner service in two seatings – the first from 6pm to 8pm, and the second from 8.30 pm onwards.
We opted for the first seating to catch both daylight and the spectacular sunset, but the second seating provides a lovely space for after-dinner cocktails with a night view of KL skyline.
Sun (not smoke) gets into your eyes
Fair warning – the sky was exceptionally clear on the evening we were there. Hence, we received the full blast of the dazzling sun rays in our eyes from 6-7pm.
However, it was all worth it as the view was amazing when the sun started to dip below the horizon.
At this point, be prepared to fight with other diners to take pictures with the setting sun as the background.
However, it was not a frenzied affair as the waiting staff was ever helpful (and trained) to help you take that money shot.
Advice: book early for the best seats
As such, we advise you to make early reservations (at least two weeks in advance) in order to secure the best seats in the house – tables closest to the balustrade.
Hola, guacamole!
So, how about the food? We enjoyed it!
According to our research, the guacamole dishes get a lot of love here.
Hence, we opted for the classic version – Fuego Guacamole (RM30).
Made with fresh avocados, green chillies, tomato, cilantro, garlic and lime – this was anything but basic. The avocados were ripe and creamy with lovely freshness from the tomatoes and a hint of spice.
The guacamole was served in a hefty stone mortar, and we really enjoyed the side of vegetable crisps. They were sliced thinly enough to yield the best crunch and crispiness.
Soft-shell crabs as nachos
Literally called Soft Shell Crab as Nachos (RM45) – we enjoyed this dish as well. The crabs were crispy with a mildly spicy batter which went well with the guacamole dip.
The dip, in particular, is more creamy due to the addition of mayonnaise, with a hint of tartness from the sour cream.
Argentinian Angus Striploin
We heard great things about the Lamb Ribs (RM130 for 500g) but unfortunately, someone else snapped the last order just before us.
Hence, we settled for the Argentinian Angus Striploin (RM150 for 400g), which did not disappoint.
Our medium rare steak was juicy with the peaty whiskey salt rub providing a nice balance of salt and smokiness.
The accompanying Mole Negra sauce is a fine complement – slightly vinegary, mildly sweet, with hints of sesame seed nuttiness. For the uninitiated, Mole is a type of Mexican sauce usually made from chillies, nuts and raisins.
Caipirinha Fuego
Feugo’s rendition of Caipirinha (RM42) – Brazil’s national cocktail – is a decent thirst-quencher.
Made with Cachaça Velha, lime, chilli, and homemade apple soda – the drink was citrusy and refreshing with a chilli bite at the end.
I want nobody but chu-rros!
Finally, how can one end the night without some Churros (RM35)?
Feugo’s version is deftly crunchy with a soft centre and exterior dusted with cinnamon powder. It was served with Dulcey chocolate cremeux and salted caramel espuma on the side, which is perfect as a dip.
Verdict
All in all, we had a lovely evening at Fuego. Come for the view — stay for the food and cocktails. We definitely recommend booking in advance to get the best seats in the house.
If you’re aiming for the sunset slot, be mindful that the sunrays can “get in your face” from 6-7pm. Just bring along some sunnies if you mind that.
We definitely recommend the guacamoles, the soft-shell crab nachos, steak and churros.
Feugo is a perfect place for casual catch-up with friends and dates.
