Gerai Seong Kee in PJ Old Town
[Non-halal] We’re back at the PJ Old Town Food Court (aka Taman Selera) for Yong Tau Foo at Gerai Seong Kee.
If you recall, we last posted about the two ais kacang stalls here – Aunty Peggy’s Ais Kacang and Jessie’s Special ABC – with the former being our favourite.
We’ve also hinted then about the excellent Yong Tau Foo (YTF) and chicken rice here, and here’s the post!
Gerai Seong Kee at Medan Selera
Gerai Seong Kee is located at the 64-year-old PJ Old Town Food Court, which is a popular haunt for cheap and delicious food. This stall alone has been serving excellent YTF for more than 30 years!
Ming used to frequent this food court regularly more than a decade ago when her previous office was in the area.
The YTF at Gerai Seong Kee and the chicken rice at Kedai Makan Kie Kee were regular orders for Ming and her colleagues back in the day.
Last week, we decided to revisit the two stalls and see if anything has changed from more than a decade ago.
Gerai Seong Kee serves YTF and other Hakka delicacies
Gerai Seong Kee (Lot 35) is a famous stall at this food court that specialises in YTF and other Hakka delicacies.
Compared to most stalls, each YTF piece (RM2.30 each) is made fresh to order here.
After filling out the form, the aunty would only stuff the fish paste into the vegetables/tofu pieces and fry it on the spot.
Hence, the waiting time can be a bit long during peak periods. Besides YTF, the stall also sells other Hakka specialty dishes such as Vinegar Pork Leg (RM23), Abacus (RM23), and Hakka Char Yuk (RM23). The Curry Fish Head (RM23) used to be a favourite order for Ming’s colleagues back in the day.
The smoothest tofu ever
So has Gerai Seong Kee’s quality stood the test of time after so many years? The answer is a smooth YES!
The YTF tasted just as Ming remembered it years ago.
The white tofu here is still the smoothest and softest that Ming has tasted in the Klang Valley. It has a nice wobble when shaken, and tasted as fresh as it could be. First-timer Max was also very impressed with the size and taste of the tofu.
Each YTF is cooked fresh to order
While the meat paste does not contain pork (as per traditional Hakka recipe), the meat filling had a nice firm texture with a prominent fish taste (with enough salted fish fragrance).
As all the YTF are cooked fresh, the fried tofu rolls have a nice crunch to them, and all of the meat fillings were juicy as well.
We also enjoyed the soup as we could taste the anchovies base for a satisfying umami, with sweetness from spring onions.
Soy sauce chicken rice at Kedai Makanan Kie Kee
Kedai Makanan Kie Kee is a stall known for its smooth soy sauce chicken rice and curry pork.
During our meal here, there was a constant queue for takeaway at this stall and the siew yoke was already sold out.
Our plate of Soy Sauce Chicken Rice and Curry Pork cost RM13.
So was it good? Yes!
A chicken rice aficionado, Max found the breast meat to be satisfyingly smooth and tender. Braised in soy sauce, the skin was very flavourful with a nice balance of soy sauce sweetness and savoury hit.
The curry pork here was very interesting. Opposed to the usual curry pork we tried, the gravy has a nutty quality similar to kuah kacang paired with satay. It still had a good spicy kick as well.
The curry gravy goes well with the rice, and the pork is adequately tender.
Don’t forget the ais kacang!
If you ever come here, be sure to order the Ais Kacang at Aunty Peggy’s. The shaved ice is especially good on a hot day as it can get quite warm here.
Summary
Make no mistake – the YTF and chicken rice here still tasted as good as we remembered it. We highly recommend the white tofu, which remains the smoothest we’ve eaten in the Klang Valley. RECOMMENDED!
