Goraesa Eomuk Fish Cake Shop 고래사어묵
[Non-halal] Eomuk or fish cake is a specialty in Busan.
While the fish cake aka odeng can be found at convenience stores nationwide, the fishcake here is different as they are made fresh without any preservatives, MSG, artificial flavours or colouring.
We tried a few eomuk shops in Busan but the one at Goraesa Eomuk stands head and shoulders above the rest we tried.
Goraesa Eomuk 고래사어묵 in Busan
Operating since 1963, Goraesa Eomuk 고래사어묵 is one of the more popular fish cake shops in Busan.
Specialising in traditional fish cakes, Goraesa operates four branches in Busan but we visited the one at Haeundae on our way to the Sky Capsule at the Blueline Park (do not miss this attraction as well).
This particular branch occupies a corner two-storey shoplot and you can’t miss it as it features a few gargantuan fish cake sticks on the facade.
There’s a huge selection of fish cakes here – ranging from the traditional fish cake sheets, to ones with rice cake, sausages, and chilli peppers.
It’s really easy to go crazy with the variety here – but it was a good idea to have some of these for take away.
Complimentary soup
For dining in, the customers are able to use the microwave to heat up the fish cakes, with proper instructions on how to heat up the food.
There’s also complimentary fish cake soup which was perfect for a cool autumn day.
Really yummy fish cakes
So were the fish cakes yummy? Yes!
We tried the Traditional Flat Fish Cake, Shrimp Roll Fish Cake (KRW3,800) and Cheese Splash (KRW3,500) which are huge cakes with various fillings.
The standout among the three had to be the Cheese Splash as the soft and gooey cheese filling worked really well with the savoury fish cake.
As for the fish cake, they had a nice bouncy texture with lots of natural fish flavour that set them apart from the mass-produced ones. They were also very juicy.
Octopus, rice cakes and sausages
As for the skewers, we opted for the Sausage and Rice Cake Fish Cake (KRW3,300) and Octopus Ball Fish Cake (KRW3,500). No complaints either as the rice cake was soft and gooey that complemented the savoury sausage well.
There were good chunks of octopus in the latter.
We also enjoyed the Korean Rice Roll with King Shrimp (KRW5,000). It was really big and the shrimp was lightly fried with a nice crispy batter that was rolled into a gimbap, alongside a fish cake and soft tofu.
Summary
If you ever visit Busan, we recommend four must-try dishes: milmyeon, seafood, dwaeji-gukbap, and eomuk.
And this was our favourite spot for eomuk.
RECOMMENDED!
