Hai Kah Lang Seafood Noodle in Cheras
[Non-halal] Hai Kah Lang is a popular seafood noodle restaurant in Taman Yulek, Cheras.
The restaurant became even more popular when it was awarded the Michelin Bib Gourmand for 2023 and 2024, and has since opened two new branches in Pudu and PJ.
Hai Kah Lang Seafood Noodle in Cheras
Recently, we tried to visit the newly opened branch in Pudu (located just next to The Exchange TRX) but had to abort our plan as the place was packed for a weekday lunch!
The next week, we made our way to the OG branch in Cheras and managed to get a table almost immediately. We were very pleased with this – as we heard the noodles at the OG stall are still best. We advise coming early at 11am on a weekday for a shorter waiting time.
Hai Kah Lang’s extensive menu
The first thing you notice at Hai Kah Lang is the row of fresh seafood produce on display at the front of the restaurant. The display encompasses everything from fresh fishes to huge tiger prawns, clams and squid.
You can pick and choose from this counter but a peek in the menu shows a wide array of selection as well.
Hai Kah Lang is popular for two dishes – the seafood noodle and fish head noodle.
The seafood noodles can be topped with your choice of seafood such as parrotfish or grouper but the one that sticks out the most from the menu is the huge Mix Seafood Noodle (RM26.90).
Mix Seafood Noodle
For RM26.90, the Mix Seafood Noodle bowl was huge. In our bowl, we received flower crab, prawns, squid, clams and fish fillet.
All of the seafood were fresh and sweet but the squid really stood out for us as it had a nice bouncy texture. It was also extra tasty on its own as it was already seasoned with some salt. We also found the soup to be light and sweet, with a slight hint of Chinese wine.
Nothing too heady, but not too faint either. In fact, we think Hai Kah Lang’s broth is probably one of the milder ones in KL – and we still prefer the broth at Little Eat Stall in Pudu, and Yeng Kee Noodle House in Taman Yulek. See our reviews below.
Ikan Kurau Noodle
We also tried the Ikan Kurau Noodle (RM20.90). The fish was perfectly cooked for a nice bouncy texture and the soup definitely has a more cleaner taste vs. the Mix Seafood Noodle.
At its core, we believe the soup is mainly flavoured by fish broth, Chinese wine and seaweed.
The Fried Fish Cake (RM8) here is thicker than most and looks more like a pie than a patty. The fish cake was properly juicy and tasty – which makes it a popular side dish order here.
Summary
While we still prefer the fish noodles at Little Eat Stall (less seafood variety but tastier broth) and Yeng Kee (strong wine sweetness in the broth), we can understand why Hai Kah Lang is popular as it excels in its variety of fresh seafood. The flavours are decent, and the seafood are cooked well.
