Hoi Peng Seafood Restaurant, SS2
[Non-halal] Hoi Peng Seafood Restaurant is one of the oldest eateries still operating on Jalan SS2/24.
While Hoi Peng has been operating for over 30 years, this is actually a branch of the equally popular Hai Peng Crab House Restaurant on Old Klang Road.
Hoi Peng Seafood Restaurant in SS2

As the name suggests, Hoi Peng specialises in seafood dishes. We’ve passed by the restaurant many times over the decades – but we only visited it this year on friends’ recommendations.

In fact, Hoi Peng was mentioned by numerous groups of friends who recommended the fried rice, crab and steamed fish here. We enjoyed the food and returned a few times in the past few months.
The restaurant is always packed during peak dinner hours, and reservation is a must for large groups. However, we’d always manage to get a table for two whenever we arrived at 6pm.
Anchovies Fried Rice

Our favourite dish here has to be the Anchovies Fried Rice (RM12 for small).
Imagine fragrant fried rice full of flavour and wok hei, and topped with crispy deep-fried silver fish/white bait.

The texture of the rice was perfect as it was not greasy with lovely full grains, and it was not too dry or wet. The fried white bait is the highlight of this dish.

The regular Yong Zhao Fried Rice (RM12) is pretty good too, but why order this when you can get the one with the crispy fishes?
Sweet & Sour Crabs

The crabs are one of the most popular dishes here, and there is always an order on every table.
Hoi Peng Seafood Restaurant serves the crab in various styles such as Salted Egg Yolk, Dry or Creamy Butter, Kam Keong and Black Pepper.

We opted for the XXXL crab in Sweet and Sour (RM185). The crab were fresh – as the meat was just oozing with juice and we could taste the natural briny sweetness of the crustacean.

The sweet and sour gravy was quite rich, with a good balance of sweet and sourness – although it did lean slightly on the spicier side. Nevertheless, it was still good to dip with Fried Man Tou (RM3).
Steamed Fish
We also enjoyed the steamed fish dishes here.

The Teochew style Steamed Tilapia (RM54) was expertly cooked to yield perfect doneness – and the gravy had a good balance of saltiness and tanginess from the tomatoes and preserved veggies.

No faults either with the Deep Fried Tilapia in Soy Sauce (RM60) but we definitely prefer the former.
Tofu and Fried Chicken Wings

The Minced Meat Tofu (RM20) was a good accompaniment as it was soft, fresh and topped with flavourful minced meat in a darker sauce. The Fried Chicken Wings were seasoned nicely as well.

Conclusion
All in all, the anchovies fried rice alone was worth the price of admission, but the other dishes were delicious too.
