[Halal] We’ll never be royals, but at least we can dine like one.
Legit! After we left this restaurant, HRH Regent and Crown Prince of Pahang arrived to have his Ikan Patin fix. See video in our Instagram post here.
Anyhoo, the House of Patin is good. The restaurant specialises in ikan patin (silver catfish) and Malay cuisine from the Pahang state. Specifically, Kuala Lipis.
Ikan patin gulai tempoyak
Naturally, we ordered the star dish – Ikan Patin Gulai Tempoyak (RM15) – or fish cooked in fermented durian sauce. Firstly, the catfish is superbly fresh. The flesh was super soft without any bau hanyir (fishy smell) and cooked just perfect. U
sually, patin’s meat ends up mushy due to overcooking or it not being fresh. The tempoyak curry was very appetising too – with a hint of durian notes, and a slight spiciness that goes well with the fish and white rice.
Daging salai masak lemak
Our friend, whose family home is in Kuantan approves! The Daging Salai Masak Lemak (RM15) – smoked beef in yellow curry – is on the spicier side, but the meat was super tender and flavourful.
Daging hitam
House of Patin’s version of Sambal Hitam (RM10) includes anchovies. It was ok-ok for me but my friends enjoyed it.
Kailan Ulam
For greens, we ordered the Kailan Ikan Masin (RM8) – it was alright – and Ulam set with Sambal Tempoyak (RM3). The ulam (raw veggies) were really nice when dicolek (dipped) into the tempoyak and sambal.
In its undiluted form, the tempoyak flavour was definitely more intense and spicier. But syioklah!
Puding raja
For dessert, we tried the Puding Raja (RM13) – a dessert purportedly created for and loved by the Pahang royal family. The jala emas (gold thread) are made from egg yolks, and served with cashew and prunes. I really appreciated that it was not very sweet (especially the custard sauce that comes with it) but my Kuantan-friend says the ones in Pahang are better.
Durian coffee
We also tried the Durian Coffee (RM10). The durian is mostly prominent to the nose, as it tastes mostly like normal white coffee.
We highly recommend this place for the fresh patin. We wanna come back for the Patin Pais (grilled patin) and Talapia Goreng.
When you play a game of thrones, you win or you die. House of Patin WINS!
