[No pork, no lard] It’s Ais Ais (Kacang), baby!
It might sound weird – but did you know that JB-style Ais Kacang contains choc sauce?
Joo Yee Ais Kacang in Taman Serene Hawker Centre is one of the more popular Ais Kacang stalls in JB.
According to the owner (Miss Joo Yee, herself!), her father was the first to add chocolate sauce to the shaved iced dessert back in the 70s.
This chocolate-topped ais kacang would eventually catch on in JB but the original recipe can still be found here.
Joo Yee Ais Kacang
Joo Kee offers a plethora of shaved iced desserts such as Ais Cendol, Ais Cikong, and Ais Jelly on the menu.
However, the original Ais Kacang (with the chocolate sauce) proved to be the most popular with most tables ordering at least one.
Yes to chocolate!
For out-of-towners like us, Ais Kacang doused generously with chocolate sauce might sound like an anomaly – but it surprisingly tasted great.
For one, we liked that the chocolate sauce was thick and not sweet. This was a nice departure from the traditional ais kacang that can get cloyingly and artificially sweet with too much syrup and sweetened water.
The remaining ingredients are familiar – corn, red beans and attap seeds – which make for an enjoyable dessert.
Truth be told – this dessert might not be for everyone, but we enjoyed it.
Rojak Buah
We also ordered a plate of Fruit Rojak from the same stall. We found this dish to be rather plain.
While the sauce was very peanut-y, we would like a bit more spice and wished they added petis udang (prawn paste) into the dish.
Perhaps we are used to the Penang-style rojak, which uses prawn paste in their sauce.
We might be wrong – but this rojak is probably a local variety (tasted similar to a Muar rojak version we tried before), which eschews the prawn paste.
In any case, the fruits such as jicama and cucumber were fresh. For crunch, they add tofu as well as youtiao (something we are not accustomed to).
The Tauhu Bakar seems like another popular order here – so perhaps go for that, if our description of the rojak does not excite you.
