[Muslim-friendly] You don’t need a golden ticket to enter this chocolate heaven – Kedai Coklat, SS2.
Ever since we first discovered Cocoraw Chocolate in 2016, we’ve been huge fans of their products.
Their chocolate truffles are one of our favorites due to the natural decadence (no artificial additives) and spotlight on single-origin Malaysian chocolate. Naturally, we were elated when they invited us for a preview of Kedai Coklat.

Kedai Coklat in SS2
Kedai Coklat is Cocoraw’s newest retail venture.
Some background: The couple behind Cocoraw – Michael and See Pin – first started making chocolate truffles in their humble kitchen in 2016.
The idea was to offer homegrown high-quality chocolate at accessible prices for Malaysians.
Michael and See Pin first peddled their delicious wares at flea markets (where we discovered them) – before starting a merchant website (find it here), and opening three Cocodash kiosks in Bangsar, LINC, and Subang Jaya.
From Kakao with love
Our first taste (and love) of Cocoraw’s chocolate are their amazing Local Kakao truffles.
These decadent morsels are made in collaboration with Seniman Kakao – a local chocolate maker who transforms local cacao beans into delicious chocolate bars.
We really enjoy the truffles as they are made in the style of Japanese Nama chocolate (popularised by Royce chocolate) with no additives added. This allows us to taste the natural characteristics of the beans, with a lovely melt-in-the-mouth consistency.
As Cocoraw’s sources vary from time to time due to seasonality, each batch of truffles may yield a different taste profile.
The Local Kakao batch currently features beans from Jengka, Pahang – with malty, earthy notes of molasses. Besides local single-origin chocolates, Cocoraw also offers exciting flavours such as Teh Tarik and Salted Gula Melaka.
Kedai Coklat – pastries, confections, drinks and more
Anyway, we digress.
Cocoraw were kind enough to invite us for their pre-opening preview of Kedai Coklat and we managed to sample a few of their offerings.
While you’ll find Cocoraws’ chocolate truffles here (along with local chocolate bars from Seniman Kakao, Chocolate Concierge, Vive Snack, and Benns Ethicoa) – the main attractions have to be the pastries, cakes, and drinks.
Most of the pastries and cakes here use locally-sourced chocolates: the Chocolate Tart (RM12) features beans from Sungai Ruan Pahang, Chocolate Nangka Swiss Roll (RM15) highlights chocolate from Bagan Datuk, Perak; while the award-winning Kelantanese chocolate takes centre stage in the Chocolate Terrine (RM18).
We counted at least 19 different pastries on offer on that day – from Chocolatine (RM12) made with BengBeng Sourdough‘s croissant to Pandan Gula Melaka Lamington Cake (RM12.50).
We were surprised to learn that all of these pastries were developed and baked by See Pin (and her team of 3 bakers) – which is amazing as she describes herself as a self-taught baker!
Chocolate Terrine – award-winning Kelantanese chocolate
While Max, Ming and a fellow invited friend had our own preferences, we all unanimously agreed on our favourite – the Chocolate Terrine (RM18).
This was truly divine! The terrine features Chocolate Concierge’s 70% Kelantan single-origin chocolate – which was awarded the World 50 Best at the 2021 Cocoa of Excellence Program.
We loved the dense ganache with a hint of acidity from the beans – which paired well with the cream and salty notes from crumbly bits. In the words of a good friend: this will fulfil your period needs/a true blue mood booster.
Due to its rich texture, the terrine is best enjoyed with a friend or two (which also allows you to enjoy their other offerings).
Pandan Gula Melaka Lamington Cake
The Pandan Gula Melaka Lamington Cake (RM12.50) is another stellar offering.
The sponge cake had a nice bouncy texture with a subtle pandan fragrance, and the Gula Melaka chocolate filling was not cloying. The desiccated coconut flakes on top were crisp too!
While Ming was not a fan, Max adored the Chocolate Nangka Swiss Roll (RM15). He thought that the natural Cempedak flavour added levity and freshness to the roll -and paired very well with the soft chocolate cream. This roll was actually refreshing and not dense at all.
Like our friend, fans of milky cream textures will enjoy the Eclair Cake made with white chocolate mousse – but we personally prefer the darker chocolate offerings from Kedai Coklat.
Flourless (or flawless) Chocolate Cake
As good things must be shared, we also brought home the Flourless Chocolate Cake (RM15) and Chocolate Passionfruit Tart (RM14) to be shared with our mom.
Flourless Chocolate Cake? More like flawless!
We enjoyed this a lot as it had the right amount of sweetness and acidity. Compared to the terrine which is savoured in smaller amounts, this easy-to-eat dessert is one we can easily inhale in a sitting (and have one each to ourselves – no sharing!).
If you enjoy tangy notes like our mom, you’ll enjoy the Chocolate Passionfruit Tart.
I have a chocolate, I have a pineapple
Besides the usual drinking chocolate drinks, Kedai Coklat also offers crafted signatures such as the Chocolate Pineapple (RM18), Honeycomb Chocolate (RM15) and Mat-Cho (RM15).
Max enjoyed the Mat-Cho as the single-origin chocolate blended very well with the umami-ness of the matcha (sourced from Oh Cha Matcha).
Ming also enjoyed the Neat (RM12) – which is basically single-origin chocolate on the rocks. Both drinks were not too sweet and not too thick – which paired well with the pastries we had that day. Kedai Coklat currently uses beans from Chemor, Perak for its chocolate drinks.
Verdict
We truly enjoyed the offerings at Kedai Coklat. The space is comfortable and unpretentious – it occupies a part of SS2 that Ming grew up in.
We highly recommend the Terrine, Flourless Chocolate Cake, and Mat-Cho drink.
