[Non-halal] If you’re gonna be delicious, it doesn’t matter if you’re black or white (or red)! This wanton mee stall at Kedai Kopi Xuu Yau in Johor Bahru (JB) was recommended by a local F&B owner.
Although we already had our breakfast for the day, we decided to check this place out based on his recommendation.
Kedai Kopi Xuu Yau in JB
Located opposite the Marrybrown Peranakan Heritage Restaurant on Jalan Tan Hiok Nee, Kedai Kopi Xuu Yau is not a touristy destination.
However, we found the food to be delicious! The space is also very pristine and clean.
Black, white or red?
Xuu Yau offers wanton mee tossed in three sauces – black (soy sauce with lard), white (lard), or red (made with char siew sauce).
As we already had breakfast, we decided to share a bowl of White Dry Wanton Mee and Fish Ball Soup.
The wanton mee is delicious! The handmade noodles were springy with a decent “QQ” texture.
The gravy is savoury with fragrance from the pork lard, and a bit of spicy kick from the chilli paste. We also did not detect any strong chemical taste from the lye water.
While the char siew slices were on the leaner side, they were not hard or rubbery at all. The wanton dumplings were nicely seasoned too.
Bouncy fish balls
The fish balls were decent too as they were bouncy with plenty of actual fish taste.
Summary
If you’re in downtown JB and looking for something good to eat, this spot is worth checking out for a good representation of JB-style wanton noodles.
