Kingdom Palace Restaurant in PJ
[Non-halal] Kingdom Palace Restaurant is a bright spot in an otherwise dead mall known as 3 Damansara (formerly Tropicana City Mall).
We haven’t been to 3 Damansara for years but ventured into this mall when we heard good things about this Chinese restaurant.
In fact, Kingdom Palace is probably one of the few long-standing establishments here. And we could see why as the restaurant was almost operating at full capacity for dim sum on a Saturday high noon.

One good thing about the mall is the ample parking space. Although occupancy for the mall is low (we guesstimate 50%) – we were pleased to see a lot of families coming here for their weekly groceries. There was also a basketball tournament happening at the main hall.
But we digressed.

We were here for the dim sum at Kingdom Palace Restaurant.
Upon seating, we were served with a saucer of acar as a tidbit. You can of course decline this tidbit (it costs RM5) but we were feeling peckish – and decided to have it anyway.

The acar was actually quite nice – not too sour, the veggies had a good crunch with enough earthiness from the nuts. It was the perfect appetizer for what came next.
When it comes to dim sum – we believe most restaurants have a mix of good, average and mediocre dishes. And Kingdom Palace was no different – although thankfully more good dishes than mediocre.
What we liked

The Steamed Siew Mai (RM14.80) was excellent. Plump morsels with enough porky juiciness and succulent prawns.

The Century Egg and Pork Porridge (RM14.80) was one of the best we’ve eaten recently. The porridge was satisfyingly thick and creamy, and seasoned perfectly with salt, pepper and julienned ginger. Lots of spring onion, century egg, pork and crispy bits that make for a full dish.

We also enjoyed the Crispy Roast Pork (RM30.80). Although we asked for a lean cut, the meat was still tender with enough juiciness from the fat, and a good crispy pork skin.

The Crispy Prawn Roll Cheong Fun (RM18.80) was also a pleasure with the succulent prawns and crispy batter rolled in thin rice flour sheets.
What was average

The Steamed Custard bun with Salted Egg Yolk (RM15.80) aka lao sar bao is kinda middling in our books. Shaped to look like ‘lil chicks, the buns were pleasingly soft but we prefer a custard filling that’s more savoury than sweet. To be sure, it was executed well – but it just came down to our preference.
What was mediocre

The Pan Fried Carrot Cake (RM10.80) was sub-par. Not enough char, and the texture was a bit too hard.
Conclusion
Overall, we were quite pleased with our meal here as the good outweighed the average and mediocre.
