Kong Kee Homemade Fishball, Kepong
[Non-halal] As the name implies, Kong Kee Homemade Fishball serves homemade fish balls made from grouper.
This restaurant is located in Taman Bukit Maluri, where pasar malam operates on Sunday evenings and home to Restoran Yuan Kee.
We like that this place offers air-conditioning which makes for a comfortable dining space, and an interior decor that dispels no doubt that it is a Chinese establishment.
Kong Kee Homemade Fishball in Taman Bukit Maluri
Aside from fish ball noodles, Kong Kee also serves Penang Hokkien Mee and yong tau foo that’s meant for sharing. They also offer xiao long bao and steamed dumplings here.
But we were quite focused on what we wanted to try – so it’s Fish Ball Noodles with yong tau foo and fish cake to share among the three of us.
Fish Ball Noodles
We ordered a bowl of dry and noodle soup each (RM9.50). On its own, the noodles are served with a decent amount of fish balls, beancurd sheets and sliced fish cake.
For the soup version, we found the broth to be decently flavoured with enough seaweed for umami. It is slightly on the “ching” (clear) but too much to call it bland. The noodles here are blanched well – so there is no weird aftertaste as well. The portion was good for the price.
The dry noodle version is decent as well – nothing spectacular, but better than average.
Fish Ball is oblongated
As for the fish balls, we liked that these were slightly oblongated (aka oblate spheroid) where the balls are slightly flattened to the middle.
As someone who choked on a fish ball once, we appreciate this as it reduces choking hazard. In terms of flavours, it has enough fish undertones with a nice and slightly bouncy texture.
Yong Tau Foo
We like that they serve Yong Tau Foo that’s meant for sharing. All of them are decent but nothing outstanding either.
However, we did find the fried fish cake too salty.
Summary
Overall, King Kee serves decent homemade fish ball noodles with a clean and tasty broth, and fish balls that’s truly homemade.
