[Non-halal] ‘Tis the season to eat seafood, lala lala la~!
When we saw a fellow IG-ian post this lala beehoon dish from Restoran Soo Kee Kiet Seafood, we knew we had to hit it up. And hit it up style, we did!
Best lala beehoon (clams) in Klang?
Lala beehoon
Whenever anyone mentions Lala Beehoon in Klang, the first name that comes to mind is Restoran Boston Baru.
That establishment located in Jalan Kapar is known for its seafood dishes – particularly the popular Steamed Clams in Superior Soup (xiong tong lala).
We have yet to try the dish in Boston Baru, but we were quite excited when fellow blogger @eatwkarmen recommended this on her IG.
According to her, the flavours of this Lala Beehoon (clams cooked in vermicelli in superior soup) is 80% similar to the ones in Boston Baru.
It is also recommended by local Klang-ites.
Hence, we were pretty game to try this as we always like to discover lesser-known gems (and avoid places which can be too popular and crowded).
So what is good? Read on to find out!
Many Soon Kee(s) in Klang
Soon Kee Kiet in Taman Gembira
The first obstacle to getting to this place is to find the right one! Turns out – there are a few restaurants with similar names in Klang.
A quick Google search yielded names such as BBK Soon Kee Seafood Restaurant in Bandar Baru Klang, Soon Kee Seafood in Klang Utama, and even a Soon Kee branch in nearby Setia Alam.
However, we ultimately decided on Restoran Soon Kee Kiet in Taman Gembira as we saw pictures of the Lala Beehoon on Google Reviews (in addition to positive reviews on the site).
Curiously, this restaurant is also listed as Soon Kee Seafood Restaurant on Google Maps (link here). Maybe they are all related?
Located close to Fruity Bakery
We came early on a Sunday morning just as the restaurant opened its doors for lunch at 11.30am. This restaurant is located in Taman Gembira – just 900m away from Fruity Bakery, known for their Perth-style Apple Strudel.
We were the first patrons at the restaurant for the day – but another two tables were soon taken up by a family and a group of colleagues.
Hello, lala beehoon!
Lala beehoon – clams with rice vermicelli in superior soup
Obviously – our first order had to be the Lala Beehoon. We asked for the medium serving ( meant for 2 pax) which costs RM25.
This turned out to be such great value as the Lala Beehoon arrived in a deep bowl. We reckon that the portion was enough to feed 3 pax comfortably.
The dish was served over a small flame (similar to those “mini stoves” used to serve Chinese-style steamed fishes) to keep the soup warm.
Huge clams!
Huge clams!
First impressions: great portion and huge clams!
The restaurant was very generous with the clams. They were fresh with sizes ranging from medium (similar to the 20 sen coin) to huge (as big as the old 50 sen coins).
The smaller clams were fresh, tender and not rubbery at all – meaning they were not overcooked. However, we found that many of the larger clams tend to have a “fishy” taste.
Hence, in this case – bigger is not always better as the smaller clams were sweeter and fresher.
Lovely sweet broth
Rich broth
Clams aside – a good Lala Beehoon dish is also determined by the quality of the soup.
We are happy to report that the soup is top-notch!
It was rich with a good balance of sweet and savoury – having infused the natural sweetness and essence of the clams into the broth.
The broth also had just enough heat from the sliced ginger and chillies.
They were also generous with the Chinese wine – but not too much to overpower the umami of the dish.
The rice vermicelli portion was good, and not too soft at the beginning – hence it soaked up the flavourful broth well.
Salted egg mantis prawn
Salted egg mantis prawns
Plenty of other seafood dishes on their menu – but Salted Egg Mantis Prawn just screamed: “Eat us!”
For RM22, this was another reasonably priced dish for the portion.
The mantis prawn was fried to perfection – crispy and flavourful, with not too much batter.
The salted egg seasoning was at the right amount to satisfy the tastebuds without getting too “jelak” (cloying).
Green dragon chives
Stir-fry green dragon chives
Finally, we ordered the stir-fry Cheng Loong Choy (green dragon chives) to complete the meal.
Restoran Soon Kee does it a bit differently here as the chives are stir-fried with beansprouts, mushrooms, carrots and sliced red chillies.
This was definitely welcomed as most restaurants tend to just fry them solely with garlic. Max thought this was a nice mix of vegetables, but Ming preferred the PJ-style version which has just garlic and green dragon chives. This dish cost RM16 for a small plate.
Verdict
Overall, the food here was worth the 30-minute drive from PJ.
We really enjoyed all the three dishes. The Lala Beehoon was tasty with a good portion served – although some of the larger clams tasted “fishy”.
We have bookmarked this place to bring family and friends to try more dishes.
