Lao Ping Hokkien Mee in PJ
[Non-halal] We tried the famous Lao Ping Hokkien Mee in Seapark PJ for the first time recently.
Operating for more than 30 years, the old man is a master of the wok as he fries each plate of black noodles over charcoal fire.
Lao Ping Hokkien Mee in PJ
This stall is located in Restoran Sea Park in PJ, and is only opened for dinner from 5pm onwards.
The stall is known for its long waiting time – so it pays to come early. We arrived here to tapau at 5.30pm and even then, we even had to wait for 25 minutes. At 6pm, most of the tables were already occupied.
There are two stoves here. The uncle solely cooks Hokkien Mee (arguably, the most popular dish here) over charcoal fire, while an aunty cooks Cantonese Noodles and Loh Mee on a gas-fired stove.
We decided to order a portion of Hokkien Mee (RM13) and Cantonese Ying Yong (RM13) for takeaway.
Charcoal fire Hokkien Mee
So, was the Hokkien Mee good? We would say it’s on par with some of the popular ones around the PJ area.
For one, the smokey flavours were very prominent as we noticed that the uncle would “douse” the noodles in the charcoal smoke when frying. Hence, points for wok hei.
The noodles are thickly coated with the gravy, and we thought it had a good balance of savoury and sweetness. While the noodles do not include any pork liver – the good amount of crispy pork lard makes up for it.
Cantonese Ying Yong
We thought the Cantonese Ying Yong was quite decent. The hor fun had enough flavour on its own, and the egg gravy was quite balanced in texture and taste. The chef was definitely not heavy-handed on the starch – so it blended well with both the hor fun and crispy thin noodles.
Summary
Overall, we are not surprised that Lao Ping Hokkien Mee has its fair share of fans as the noodles were decent. But be prepared to wait during peak hours.
