[Halal] We went into the heart of Kampung Baru today for some authentic Nasi Padang – literally, at Masakan Padang Asli.
We arrived early for lunch, so most of the dishes were still available. Originating from West Sumatra, Indonesia – Nasi Padang is the pride of the Minang people and differs slightly from your local Malay cuisine and kandar places. Minang cuisine emphasizes three elements – gulai (curry), lado (chilli pepper), and bareh (rice).
The dishes here are less spicy with a heavy feature on turmeric and other spices. The sambal hijau and lado here were pretty mild with a nice tinge of sourness.
My plate comprising ayam gulai, tempeh, bergedil and sambal hijau
For my plate, I took Ayam Gulai, Tempeh Goreng, Bergedil, Kentang Goreng, Taugeh and Sambal Hijau. I really enjoyed the Ayam Gulai – the chicken was very tender and flavorful. Every other dish was yummy too – I like that they not too oily or dry.
Dendeng berlado
To share, we ordered the Dendeng Berlado – thinly sliced beef cooked with chilli pepper. The dendeng here is crispy but still packs a flavour. Despite it appearance, the lado is not spicy, but compliments the beef with its sourness. However, I do prefer the moist and tender dendeng at Nasi Kapau in Chow Kit (check out our review here and here).
Talapia berlado
My friends had great things to say about the Talapia Berlado – fish was fried til crispy – as well as the paru (beef lung) goreng. The star dish here though has to be Tunjang Gulai (beef tendon curry) – my friend enjoyed the gravy very much. It’s high in cholesterol though. .I will definitely come back to try to fried fishes and tunjang gulai.
My friend’s rice topped with tunjang gulai
The dishes here pack less heat than other Padang outfits in KL – but are delicious, all the same. Come early as it is a popular place for lunch. Most dishes come out fresh out of the kitchen at noon.
