[Non-halal] For delicious Mee Jawa and prawn mee, head down to Restoran Wan Shoon in Damansara Kim.
Penang-style Mee Jawa is a rarity in the Klang Valley, so we were pretty excited to check this out since we read about it in Malay Mail earlier this year.
Some of our friends also recently visited the spot also had great things to say about the Mee Jawa here.
Mee Jawa, Restoran Wan Shoon
Operated by Butterworth native Fang, this stall is located inside Restoran Wan Shoon.
The stall offers only three items on its menu – Mee Jawa, Penang prawn noodles, and dry prawn noodles.
While the restaurant was pretty busy on a Saturday morning, we were able to secure a table quite easily – and our food arrived about 10 minutes after we placed our order.
Besides Fang’s prawn noodles, the curry mee and soy chicken rice stalls are pretty popular with the crowd too.
Mee Jawa at Restoran Wan Shoon
The Mee Jawa’s (RM7.50) presentation is definitely one of the most enticing we’ve seen in a kopitiam.
Served on the traditional Chinese “roaster” ceramic plate, the noodles are served in a pool of dark orange gravy, with a generous heap of peanut and lettuce garnish.
The noodles come with a few crackers and a side of sambal. Give the noodles a good toss, and you’ll find fish cakes, egg, tofu, beansprouts, and cuttlefish.
We enjoyed the thick gravy – which we found to be quite balanced in terms of sweetness and savouriness with a noticeable prawn taste.
It had an appetising “starchy” quality – which makes for an enjoyable slurp when it coats the noodles. The sambal also added a nice spicy dimension to the dish.
Prawn noodles with added ribs
With its fiery red broth, we also enjoyed the Hokkien prawn noodles here (RM13 with added pork ribs).
The broth had a decent spicy kick with a discernible prawn base. The sambal on the side definitely helped to elevate the heat. We also found the ribs to tender and flavourful.
Summary
Overall, we were really pleased with both the Mee Jawa and prawn noodles here. This is definitely a spot worth returning to, and we’ll bring our mom our next visit here.
