Mei Wen Little Kitchen in PJ
[Non-halal] Mei Wen Little Kitchen is a dai chow place located in Section 17, Petaling Jaya.
We visited this spot twice for dinner and enjoyed the dishes we ordered. However, be prepared to wait during peak periods as they operate a lean team.
Mei Wen Little Kitchen in Section 17 PJ
For a relatively small Chinese eatery (about 8-10 tables here), Mei Wen Little Kitchen has quite a diverse menu.
The restaurant appears to specialise in claypot dishes, with a number of their signatures served in earthenware.
These include the Claypot Fish Head Curry, Pork Ribs and Yam Casserole, and Sweet Vinegar Pork Trotter.
That said, we found that most of their non-signature dishes were excellent as well.
Claypot Curry Pork
The Claypot Curry Pork (RM26) here is a popular item and we can see why.
Despite ordering the smallest portion, the dish had a good amount of okra, sliced pork and onions.
The broth is the kind where we can drench a bowl of rice with – and feel satiated by the end of the meal. It had the right amount of santan, with aromatic hits from the spices. The pork slices were tender and the vegetables had a good crunch to them.
Claypot Kangkong with Pork Lard
We also really enjoyed the Claypot Kangkong with Pork Lard (RM18).
Compared to the usual Kangkong Belacan, this one has more onion sweetness which reminded us of the Penang Nyonya version, but with addition of crispy pork lard to elevate the dish.
This had a good balance of sweetness, savouriness, and spiciness. Also, the Kangkong were not overly cooked and retained its crunch.
Tofu with Minced Pork and Choy Poh
This was the dish that we ordered on both occasions – and it was delicious.
Homemade tofu was delicate with a nice crispy exterior – with a good savoury kick from soy sauce, minced pork and choy poh.
Brinjal with Salted Fish and Minced Pork
We also couldn’t find fault with the Brinjal with Salted Fish and Minced Pork.
Brinjal has a good soft texture (but not too mushy), and we detected a tangy hint in the gravy which blended well with the heat from chillies, and saltiness from the salted fish.
Claypot Pumpkin Chicken
We enjoy a good Chinese dish cooked with pumpkin – so we couldn’t resist ordering this despite it not being a “specialty dish”.
We loved the generous portion of sliced pumpkin in this dish but the surprise was the gravy which had a bit of “yam” quality to it. The chicken pieces were also tender despite being from the thigh/drumstick cuts.
Summary
All in, we were very pleased with the dishes from both visits – and we will continue to visit this spot.
