Nely’s Passion Heart
[Pork-free] We absolutely adore the cakes at Nely’s Passion Heart in Penang.
Tucked in a quiet alley in Georgetown, Nely’s Passion Heart offers a slice of nostalgia with its offering of traditional bakes in a homely setting.
Find traditional bakes such as marble butter cake and banana loaf, alongside unique offerings such as Cempedak Crumble, Onde-Onde Cake and Durian Mudpie. All of the cakes here are made with natural ingredients without any preservatives.
Nely’s Passion Heart in Penang
Nely’s Passion Heart is a family-owned business that’s been operating for more than a decade.
Madam Nely Koon’s passion for baking started as a hobby before she started selling cakes at markets, and finally opening her cafe – Passion Heart, in Muntri Street years ago.
The relocation to the current spot came with the change of name to Nely’s Passion Heart but the delectable offerings remain the same.
Cempedak Crumble
This spot is a local favourite, with most customers coming here for the Cempedak Cake and Cempedak Crumble (RM20).
We ordered the latter – which became our favourite dessert of the trip. In fact, we tapau-ed a second one for our trip back to KL.
According to Nely’s son, the family orders a huge volume of the jackfruit when it is in season, and bulk freeze them. These painstakingly peeled fruits are then used to make the Cempedak offerings throughout the year.
We enjoyed the generous amount of ripe cempedak chunks in the pie, and the crumble had the perfect crumbly texture. This was perfect to enjoy with a cup of black coffee.
Durian Mudpie and Marble Cake
The Durian Mudpie (RM22) is an interesting combination of cheese, chocolate, and durian kampung sourced from Balik Pulau.
We enjoy all these separately, and it worked very well in this form as the dark velvety chocolate complements the fragrant durian flavours.
Nely’s Marble Butter Cake (RM13) should please those who like something more traditional.
Nely also bakes sourdough for her husband – which are also available for customers on selected days of the week. Hot food such as Jawa Mee and pasta are also available here.
