Nine Spots for Chicken Rice in KL & PJ
[Non-halal] Chicken rice is the ultimate comfort dish for one half of ThokohMakan. Max can quite literally eat chicken rice — and its many variations — for consecutive meals without getting bored. So it’s only natural that we’re excited to finally share this list. Here are nine spots for chicken rice in KL and PJ.
There are hundreds of chicken rice stalls and restaurants across Kuala Lumpur and Petaling Jaya. That said, most of our recommendations are concentrated in PJ, simply because that’s where we live and eat most often.
Chicken rice is a dish deeply tied to nostalgia and personal preference.
Everyone has their own benchmark — whether it’s the fragrance of the rice, the tenderness of the chicken, or the punch of the chilli and ginger. It’s also the perfect “working man’s meal”: simple, affordable, satisfying, and complete with protein, carbs, and even a bit of veg on the side.
1. Dudu Yummy, Ara Damansara

Dudu Yummy is best known for its excellent char siew, but the chicken here deserves just as much attention. The roasted chicken is tender and well-seasoned, while the rice is fragrant and cooked just right. This is Max’s regular weekly fix, usually ordered as a char siew–chicken combo. 2. Shui Kee Steamed Chicken, PJ Old Town

Located in a bungalow lot, Shui Kee is a popular spot for Ipoh-style steamed chicken and hor fun. The chicken here is notably sweet, silky, and tender — simple but very well executed. More in this post.
3. Restoran Ban Huat Heng, Section 17 PJ

An excellent spot for steamed chicken, but the real standout here is the grated ginger paste. Fragrant and punchy, it elevates the whole plate and keeps us coming back. Read more here.
Kedai Kopi Yun Kei, Section 17

Our go-to chicken rice spot in the Section 17 commercial area. Meals come with self-service soup and beansprouts, which is always a nice touch. We usually go for the chicken–char siew combo, topped with a braised egg. More details here.
5. PJ Khao Man Gai, Ara Damansara

A Thai-style chicken rice specialist serving both steamed and fried chicken breast. The highlight here is the ginger-chilli condiment, which adds a bold, aromatic kick to the dish. Check out the post here.
6. Restoran Shun Fa, Pudu

Located near TRX, this long-running spot has been around for over 40 years. Aside from chicken rice, they’re also well known for their braised chicken feet. A popular lunch destination for the surrounding working crowd. More in this post.
7. Restoran Kong Sai, Taman Paramount

Our go-to tapau spot when we’re craving comforting Chinese dishes. The steamed chicken is solid, and we often add sharing dishes like tofu and double-boiled soup to the order. Check out our original post here.
8. Guang Ji, Pudu

Guang Ji is better known for its kai si hor fun, which we found just average. We much prefer the steamed chicken rice here — simple, comforting, and reliably good. Check out the post here.
9. Sin Chew Restaurant, SS3

Max’s childhood favourite. This is the spot to visit for roasted chicken and siew yoke, ideally topped with a braised egg for the full nostalgic experience. More in this post.
Chicken rice may look simple, but the details matter — and these are the spots that get it right for us.
