[Pork-free] For homely Japanese cooking and fresh sashimi, check out Nippori Cafe.
It has been years since we were here, but we decided to check it out after hearing our friend raved about it. The fact that Nippori is the only full house (with a waiting list) in an otherwise quiet (and neglected) complex is a testament to its popularity and success.
King salmon nigiri
We tired the signature King Salmon Nigiri (RM42) – three nigiris topped with super long salmon sashimi (about 15cm liddat) with three different toppings.
There’s no two ways about it, the sashimi are super fresh and creamy. All Norwegian trouts are air-flown every Tues, Thurs and Sat and Chef Fukuzata only uses the freshest and fatty trouts.
The sashimi were so good by itself (one is lightly torched) that we didn’t need the wasabi. The three toppings – tobiko mayo, aburi mentai, and crabmeat gratin cheese – elevates the creaminess!
Home-style set – grilled salmon chicken karaage
Nippori is also known for their home-style sets (26 sets in total); we opted for the Grilled Salmon and Chicken Karaage (RM48).
In the grilled form – the salmon was so tender and juicy! The karaage was good too as batter was crunchy and chicky was tender. The set came with rice, miso soup, salad, chawanmushi, pickled veggie, tuna and fruits.
Garlic butter edamame
Finally, the Garlic Butter Edamame (RM12) was the perfect starter – boiled legumes with simple but delicious seasonings of fried garlic and butter.
The menu is super extensive with handrolls, ramen, pizzas (!), and special sun-dried saba fish! You’ll find them saba hanging at the entrance.
My friend also recommended the salmon trout sashimi (for pure buttery creaminess), duck pizza and Hokkaido cheesecake. Next time la!
