No. 5 Char Koay Teow in Penang
[Non-halal] No. 5 Char Koay Teow on Macalister Road was our first stop in Penang.
This stall used to operate on Burma Road before it moved here and shares a space with a durian stall.
No. 5 Char Koay Teow on Macalister Road
We arrived at 6.45pm on a Friday night.
The process here is a bit different: First find and table and sit down. The helper will only come and take your order just before the chef fries your plate. So he took our order at 7pm and dug into our plates at 7.05pm.
Normal Char Koay Teow is excellent
The normal Char Koay Teow (RM10) comes with lots of fresh siham, two big prawns, lap cheong and chives. This was very good! There was plenty of wok hei in the dish, with enough spicy kick from the chilli paste.
The biggest surprise was the generous bits of crispy pork lard that’s cooked into the dish, and the good amount of chives also helped to cut through the lardiness.
The fresh cockles here are as fresh as they come! They are fat and juicy – and are only laden on the plate of freshly cooked CKT before serving. There’s no fishy smell at all with these siham.
RM20 Char Koay Teow with added snow crab
For RM20, you can supersize your plate with snow crab meat. The meat was fresh and sweet but the normal plate was good enough for us.
We ate CKT at three different spots during this trip and this was the most outstanding plate for us.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
