Restaurant Taman Emas, Penang
[Non-halal] Wan Dao Tou Asam Laksa is located inside Restaurant Taman Emas on Jalan Gottlieb, Penang.
Run by two sisters, the laksa here is based on a family’s 50-year-old recipe that has been enjoyed by locals for years.
Asam laksa at Restaurant Taman Emas

For RM7.50, Wan Dao Tou’s Asam Laksa has all the requisite ingredients – pineapple, ginger torch, cucumber and a good dollop of he kou (shrimp paste) in a thick soup.

The broth has the right balance of sweet, salty and tang. It’s not too spicy or sour with a good amount of fish chunks, which we liked. The noodles also had a good firm-ish bite.
Aside from laksa, the sisters also offer kuih talam, chai kueh, popiah and kuih kosui.

Restaurant Taman Emas’ Char koay teow

Over the years, we have skipped popular char koay teow stalls and preferred ones recommended by our Penangite friends.
We find that most char koay teow stalls are good enough for us (and better than most in KL), and the one here is no different.

For RM10 with duck egg, the koat teow had enough wok hei and char. They are also generous with the lap cheong, and did not over-do the crispy pork lard.
A little chilli goes a long way to elevate the dish from “meh” to good, and the two big shrimps were big and succulent.
Conclusion
Do consider Restaurant Taman Emas if you’re looking for a one spot to meet your CKT and laksa needs.
Despite being a Michelin-recommended spot, there weren’t a lot of tourists here and we didn’t have to wait long for our noodles.
