[Non-halal] Hari-hari makan sedap, mesti rasa gembira! Restoran Gembira in Taman Megah is one of the more popular kopitiams in the area.
In fact, Ming grew up eating the Penang prawn mee here almost every weekend during her youth.
Restoran Gembira in Taman Megah
We visited Restoran Gembira on the last day of 2022. This coffee shop is usually packed during the breakfast/lunch hours due to the popularity of its stalls.
Well-known stalls here include the Penang prawn mee stall, yong tau foo, Hakka lui cha, and Sarawak laksa.
Despite growing up in PJ, Max had not eaten at this coffee shop, and it had been years since Ming visited the place too.
Prawn Mee – spicy and umami-rich
The Penang Hokkien Prawn Mee stall here is probably the most popular stall here.
Madam Yang from Penang has been operating for more than 30 years. For RM8, the Prawn Noodles is definitely one of the most generous bowls we’ve seen in PJ.
The bowl was filled to the brim with broth, and liberally garnished with pork slices, beansprouts, kangkung, and prawns.
Amazingly, the dish tasted just the same as Ming remembered it after so many years. The broth was salty, prawny, spicy with good umami depth from the prawns!
Ming still found the broth to be one of the spiciest (and addictive) ones in town – but it still made for a lovely and satisfying bowl. Max enjoyed it as well!
The Prawn Mee tasted similar to our favourite stall at Yong Len in TTDI, but with a more spicy kick!
This Prawn Mee is defnitely value for money, and worth checking out if you like Penang prawn mee with some serious heat!
Delicious Sarawak laksa
The stall that sells Sarawak laksa and kolo mee is popular too. Hailing from Miri, the Chia family has been operating here for the last 20 years.
Max managed to order the last bowl of Sarawak Laksa (known as Kuching laksa here) just before they shuttered for the day. For RM10, this bowl was filled with three prawns, beansprouts, shredded chicken, and lots of omelette strips.
While not the best in PJ – we found the broth to be very decent with a good balance of saltiness, savouriness, and spice. However, the broth really came to life with the addition of lime and sambal.
Curiously, the laksa was served with yellow egg noodles (used for Kolo Mee) instead of the rice vermicelli. We’re not sure if they had run out of the noodles that day, but we’d imagine the rice noodles would have elevated the dish even further.
We noticed that the Kolo Mee (known as Kam Lau Mee here) here is popular with the masses too.
Summary
It is not without reason why Restoran Gembira is one of the more popular coffee shops in Taman Megah. Definitely do check out the stalls here if you’re looking for something delicious, with generous portions that are value for your money.
