Restoran Happy Town in Subang
[Non-halal] It’s kai si hor fun day! Restoran Happy Town in SS15 Subang Jaya houses one of the more popular kai si hor fun (shredded chicken noodles) in the area.
So, we decided to check it out on a Saturday morning.
Restoran Happy Town in Subang
Restoran Happy Town is located in the popular SS15 commercial area.
Like any typical Chinese kopitiam, there are a few stalls selling different dishes – ranging from chicken rice to braised pork rice and Siam Laksa.
However, we were there to check out the Kai Si Hor Fun stall as we heard good things about it.
Kai Si Hor Fun at Restoran Happy Town
Run by two friendly Chinese aunties and an assistant, we learned that they used to operate at Big Family Restaurant next to the SS15 LRT station.
As the name implies, the stall specialises in Ipoh-style KSHF.
The stall offers three options – Shredded Chicken Hor Fun (RM8), Prawn and Shredded Chicken Hor Fun (RM9), and Chicken Hor Fun (RM9.50).
As we love both chicken and prawns – we ordered the Prawn and Shredded Chicken Hor Fun.
Sweet and savoury KSHF
Overall, we thought the KSHF was quite decent.
The broth had a good balance of sweetness and savoury with a touch of prawn oil for that extra umami.
However, we did find the broth was a bit inconsistent. We ordered two bowls of KSHF and found one to be in the sweeter side.
The standout here has to be the prawns – as they were succulent and fresh. They were quite generous with the shredded chicken too.
However, the noodles texture was not the smoothest we’ve tried.
Assam Laksa was not so great
We also tried the Assam Laksa (RM9.90) from the Kim Laksa stall here.
However, the dish was a far cry from the original Kim Laksa we ate in Balik Pulau, Penang (see our post here).
We found the broth (and he ko) to be pretty diluted, and lacked the tangy kick. The noodles were also a bit too hard for our preference. The only saving grace of the bowl is the big piece of mackerel served.
Great juicy fried chicken
On the flip side, we do recommend the fried chicken from the MZK Crispy Fried Chicken stall here.
The fried chicken was simple but satisfying. At RM5.50, the chicken was actually juicy and tender, and served warm. And the skin was crispy too and cooked with a batter with the right amount of salt and spices.
Summary
Overall, we thought the KSHF here was quite decent albeit inconsistent. It might be the best KSHF you can find in the Subang area (do make a suggestion if you disagree).
However, skip the Assam Laksa.
