Restoran Ma Bo in Puchong
This humble stall in Restoran Ma Bo is the busiest stall when we visited it for brunch on Friday. However, we do see orders for the pan mee and wanton mee stalls in the kopitiam/cha sat as well.
We first learned about this stall from Chef Guan Chua on his Instagram account here.
The stall here specialises in the homemade fish balls that are reportedly made with a mix of yellowtail and sea eel. We really enjoyed the fish balls as it has a light and bouncy texture, which probably means they did not use a lot of cornstarch as filler.
It also has the right amount of salt to enhance the natural fish flavours.
Good portion, good price
We ordered a bowl of Dry Fish Ball Noodles (RM10), and also the Soup Version (RM9).
They are really generous with the portion for the price. The bowl of dry noodles comes with a big amount of noodles, and a separate bowl of soup containing three fish balls, two meat balls, two fuchuk and two fried fishcakes.
The noodles are also topped with minced pork, fried pork lard and spring onion.
We like that they offer an amazing selection of noodles – from the usual meehoon to kuey teow and lo shi fun.
We opted for a mix of yellow noodles and lo shi fun. The combo worked as it really absorbed the soy sauce mix well. The gravy itself was satisfactory with a good balance of saltiness and sweetness. The fried pork lard bits were crispy too, and the spring onions helped to cut through with some freshness.
Rolling with the balls
The highlights were of course the balls. As mentioned, the fish balls really stood out in terms of texture and flavours, but the other ingredients excelled on their own terms. All had the right texture and flavours to make it a truly enjoyable bowl. We liked there some paste “plasted” to the fuchuk as well.
The soup was on the lighter side with just the right amount of seasoning – which allowed the main ingredients to shine.
We prefer the dry noodles to the soup version.
Summary
This fishball stall ticks all the right boxes! Good portion, fresh and tasty balls, and a good combo of noodles and ingredients.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
