[Non-halal] Hor fun so fun!
Pau Kee is an establishment in Jalan Imbi. Tradition and consistency live on here as the group of elders have been selling hor fun since the 1970s!
Operating at this current location since 2009, the 70-year old chef continues to wake up daily at 4am to get the freshest ingredients, cook and make the wontons himself!
Kai si hor fun
Obviously, the Kai Si Hor Fun is the star here! With a more traditional recipe, the broth is clear (some would say bland for the modern taste buds) with mild sweetness coming from the prawns. The addition of prawn oil provides aroma. The flat noodles are adequately smooth, and the prawns were fresh and springy.
Kai si hor fun – dry version
As for the dry version, the soy sauce mix is well balanced – not too salty with a hint of sweetness from the prawn oil.
The Prawn Wontons and Dumplings (sui kow) are the popular add-ons here – but we opted for their Poached Chicken (more protein!) instead. The chicken comes with some bean sprouts.
Chicken was tender and smooth. Again, we appreciate that they were not heavy handed on the soy sauce.
Besides hor fun, they also serve curry noodles and wanton noodles here.
Generally, I prefer the hor fun at Chan Thong Kee (a few doors down the road) as I find the soup to be more flavourful. I also prefer CTK’s wontons as it is more springy and lightly seasoned with pepper.
There is also the hor fun stall at Mei Sin Eating House (a 2-minute walk away) which I like for the dry version. Will post about these another time.
