Restoran Ruby Dessert House in Pudu
[Pork-free] Restoran Ruby aka Kan Brothers Ruby Dessert House in Pudu has been operating for 97 years.
This dessert shop is currently being run by the fifth generation brothers of Vincent and Dickson Kan, and specialises in Chinese sesame seed desserts (aka chi ma wu).
The previous master Ricky Kan is said to be the King of Chi Ma Wu in Malaysia, and had pioneered the secret recipes for Creamy Steamed Egg Custard, Black Sesame Paste, Peanut Paste, Almond Paste and Walnut Paste.
Restoran Ruby in Pudu
Restoran Ruby is located in the heart of Pudu. After our satisfying dinner at the 168 Claypot Chicken Rice (see our post here), we decided to walk over to Restoran Ruby for our fix of Chinese desserts.
Note that Restoran Ruby is only a 3-minute walk from 168 Claypot Chicken Rice and also Restoran Sek Yuen (see our post here) – so definitely leave some space for dessert if you’re having your meal at these places.
Operating since 1927, Restoran Ruby is famous for its sesame seed paste that is grounded daily with a stone grain mill.
Traditional sesame paste desserts with art
Restoran Ruby offers four types of dessert paste – Black Sesame, Peanut, Almond, and Walnut (RM4-6 per bowl for dine-in).
These flavours can be mixed into different combos, and the Restoran even offers cute “latte art” such as Totoro, Crayon Shin Chan, and Monkey.
Besides Chi Ma Wu, Restoran Ruby also offers Steamed Egg Custard (RM4) and Herbal Tea (RM6).
My dessert Totoro
We decided to try the combo of Black Sesame-Peanut-Almond, and a bowl of only Peanut Paste.
The former came in the form of Totoro (how cute!) while the latter came with a smiley face.
Firstly, we do like the texture of the different paste. They were quite thick and creamy, and had enough natural flavours of the different nuts/seeds.
Among the three, we thought the Black Sesame was the most fragrant and tasty. We wished the Peanut had a bit more roasted aroma. We also realised that we typically don’t enjoy Almond paste, as it had a strange artificial taste.
Summary
The desserts were a good end to our meal on that cold evening in Pudu. We also like the decor and neon lights at the restaurant, which made us feel like we’re in Hong Kong.
