Restoran Yat Yeh Heng in PJ
[Non-halal] Restoran Yat Yeh Heng in SS4 PJ is a popular lunch spot for chicken rice.
This restaurant is home to the Kee Kee Bentong White Chicken Rice, but recently became popular for a stall that sells flying wantan mee.
We checked Restoran Yat Yeh Heng recently to see what it’s all about.
Restoran Yat Yeh Heng in PJ
We’ve last visited Restoran Yat Yeh Heng many years ago.
We have a few friends who counted this as one of their favourite spots for chicken rice, but we remembered that it didn’t make too much of an impression then.
Nevertheless, we are always game to re-visit a spot, as we also wanted to check out the wantan mee stall here as well.
Kee Kee Bentong White Chicken stall
The Kee Kee Bentong White Chicken is arguably the most busiest stall here. Even at 11am, the stall was busy fulfilling orders for both dine-in customers and takeaways. The chicken typically runs out by 1pm – so we advise coming early to avoid disappointment.
While the stalls in Yat Yeh Hing are run by different operators, you can actually order them from the same person after getting your table.
However, payments are to be made separately to the different owners.
Chicken is a smooth operator but…
So – has our view on the steamed chicken changed after all these years?
We ordered a two person portion of White Chicken with a serving of rice for RM24.
Honestly, we thought the chicken was smooth and tender with enough savoury hit from the soy sauce mix. However, we would still consider it as average as the chicken was still a bit too cold when served, and we think the soy sauce could be a bit more fragrant.
We still prefer the white chicken at Ban Huat Heng in Section 17 PJ (see our post) and Restoran Kong Sai (see post here) as they have the edge in fragrance, and really killer ginger paste.
Nevertheless, we did enjoy the free soup here which you could help yourself to. The soup for the day was radish soup with lots of chicken feet (yums!).
Char Siew Wantan Mee
On the other hand, we actually found the Char Siew Wantan Mee (RM7) to be quite delicious.
Theatrics aside (the owner would toss the noodles about 2-3 feet up in the air), the noodles had a really nice springy al-dente bite.
It was also thinner than commercially-made egg noodles, and was beautifully coated with a soy sauce mix with a good savoury-sweet balance.
The char siew also had the right amount of char and melt-in-the-mouth goodness.
Homemade tofu and veggies
We finish our our meal, we also ordered a serving of their Homemade Tofu and Steamed Veggies (RM25 for both). These were decent complementary dishes for our meal.
Also – do check out their Kat Chai Suen Mui 桔子酸梅. The calamansi plum juice was refreshing with a right amount of tanginess and sweetness.
Summary
While decent, we still think the chicken rice here is just average. Nevertheless, the service was good and we liked the free flow of soup. The wantan mee was the surprise hit for us – and it’s something we would likely return for.
