Rinjin Shokudo Subang Jaya
[Non-halal] The popular Rinjin Shokudo in Bukit Jalil has opened a second branch in Subang Jaya.
Rinjin Shokudo offers comforting Japanese home-style cooking with a mix-and-match system of set meals that we really liked.
Rinjin Shokudo 隣人食堂 in Subang Jaya
Located in the light industrial area of SS18, Rinjin shares the same space as EX8 and Grey Sky Morning Cafe.
Recently lifting its shutters in Jan 2024, Rinjin Shokudo is known for its signature ichiju sansai 一汁三菜, which allows patrons to mix-and-match a meal set of one main course, two side dishes and one soup with rice.
For mains, Rinjin Shokudo offers a bevy of choices such as grilled halibut in sweet miso, fried breaded oysters, beef hambagu steak, and tori karaage; while side dishes range from ebi chawanmushi, tororo nato, to smoked duck potato salad.
We really like the variety offered here for the course meal, but you can also opt for ala carte items such as Kitsune Udon, Bacon Okonomoyaki, and Mille-Feuille Nabe. The cheesecake seems popular here as well.
Hamaguri no Sakamushi
For starters, we decided to share the Hamaguri no Sakamushi (RM22.90), which is a dish of live hamaguri clams steamedin sake broth.
While the menu claims to serve live clams, we did find the texture slightly slimy, but we really enjoyed the strong sake fragrance and rich savoury flavours of the broth.
Grilled Halibut
For the set meal, Ming opted for the Halibut Saikyō-yaki (RM43.90) as the main dish with Agedashi Tofu and Hiyashi Tomato as the recommended sides.
Marinated in a sweet white saikyo miso, the halibut is exquisitely tender and juicy with a texture that reminds us of cod. We did find the miso marinade to be on the sweeter side, but that did not deter us from enjoying the natural sweetness of the fish.
The two side dishes were the appropriate recommendations – the Agedashi Tofu was soft with a batter that’s not too thick at all and we liked the light savoury dashi.
The Hiyashi Tomato features chilled Sakura cherry tomatoes harvested in Cameron Highlands served in light pepper yuzu dressing. The lightness of the tangy cherry tomatoes was nice to cut through the buttery flavours of the Halibut.
Miso-Aged Tonkatsu
Max opted for the Miso-aged Tonkatsu (RM35.90) for his set meal, with Ebi Chawanmushi and Tako Su as sides.
The tonkatsu comprises a premium pork loin that’s aged with miso before it is deep-fried with panko for a crispy, golden finish.
While the pork loin was lean through and through, it was tender and juicy. It also had a slight miso umami thanks to the aging process, which goes well with the mustard and sweet sauce dip.
We also enjoyed the Ebi Chawanmushi. The steamed custard egg was soft and well-seasoned, and served with a succulent prawn on top.
The Tako Su’s marinade of tangy and sweet vinaigrette was a nice contrast to the egg and pork.
Summary
Overall, we really enjoyed our meal here at Rinjin Shokudo. We like the variety of dishes offered here and ability to mix-and-match the dishes.
The space is also very comfortable, and is perfect for gathering with family and friends thanks to a number of big tables peppered arounf the restaurant. We do recommend making reservations.
RECOMMENDED.
