[Pork-free] How about some Keralan food?
After our hike at Bukit Gasing on a Saturday morning, we checked out Shobana’s Kerala Kitchen nearby for some Keralan cuisine.
Interestingly, the kitchen is headed by Indonesian Sri Wati, who used to cook at the now shuttered May n Mikes. Shobana’s have since taken over MnM’s space, with some new dishes on offer.
First, the vegetables side dishes to our Banana Leaf Rice (RM8) were excellent! They were all very fresh and tasty. In particular, the cucumber raita tasted like coleslaw (can we call it raita without yoghurt?) but it was very refreshing.
Fish molee
The standouts: We all enjoyed the Fish Molee (RM10) – fried fish cooked in coconut gravy. If you don’t like heavy curries, you’ll love this as the gravy is very light and fragrant (and not pedas).
Cutlets
The Fish and Vegetables Cutlets (RM2 each) here were nice too – freshly fried with a nice crusty skin and good chunks of meat (or veggies) mixed with spices.
Fish puttu
The Fish Puttu (RM7.50) was another standout – shredded mackarel marinated with turmeric, and cooked with coconut, onions and other spices. So simple but tasty!
Ikan bilis sambal
There’s a bit of Nusantara flair with Ikan Bilis Sambal (RM9) – if you like some heat, you’ll like this. But we found this to be #bishebishesaje.
Coconut fried chicken
Max particularly enjoyed the Coconut Fried Chicken (RM8.50) – freshly fried with super flaky batter. But the rest of the family thought it tasted like regular fried chicken.
Chicken curry
The Chicken Curry was alright (RM7.50) – not as outstanding at the other fish dishes, IMHO.
Overall, we all enjoyed the food here, with each of us having our own fav dish.
We arrived just as the restaurant opened at 11.30am. Within 30 minutes – the placed was full. So we recommend to go early especially on weekends.
