[Non-halal] Kolo mee, follow me.
We’ve been seeing a lot of Kolo mee pics from Slurrp on our feed, and so we decided to order ’em for the weekend.
Operating out of a home in Mont Kiara, Slurrp offers authentic Sarawakian kolo mee using a family recipe.
Their menu is simple: it’s either Sarawak Kolo Mee or Red Sarawak Kolo Mee (RM10.90 each).
Handmade springy noodles
OG Sarawak Kolo Mee
The original kolo mee looks as authentic as it gets. Some local stalls tend to use local wanton noodles to make kolo mee – but in our mind, authentic kolo mee should be al-dente with a nice bite and never soggy.
It should also be springy and curly. Slurrps’s noodles were definitely on point, as they are handmade by a Sarawakian.
Savoury and salty
We also liked the seasoning for the OG. Packed in traditional clear plastic sheets, all we needed to do was to give the noodles a good toss. In terms of flavour, the kolo mee was savoury and salty, with a hint of sour notes. We could definitely taste the natural sweetness from the shallot oil.
We did find the noodles slightly too oily though. We also wished the portions were abit larger and there was some soup to accompany the noodles, although we know the latter can make it difficult to transport.
Standard toppings
The standard toppings are here – fish cakes, minced meat, meatball and char siew. All were tasty and complemented each other well.
Pretty in pink
Red Kolo Mee
Nevertheless, Max prefers the Red Sarawak Kolo Mee, as the red char siew sauce adds a subtle sweetness and moisture to the noodles. It helped to balance the taste as the OG noodles were slightly on the saltier side.
Both noodles were served with pickled chillies, but we accidentally dropped them on the floor.
Verdict
Overall – while it’s not the best we’ve had, Slurpp’s noodles were definitely authentic and decent. Do check them out, if you are craving kolo mee.
