Sōfte in Ilham Tower KL
[Pork-free] We’re softies for Sōfte ‘s amazing soft serve and freshly-made madeleines.
The first of many new F&Bs to be opened at Ilham Tower, Sōfte offers soft-serve that combines Asian flavours and modern culinary techniques.
Sōfte in KL
Sōfte is helmed by executive pastry chef Elwyn Boyles, whose illustrious career includes stints as the executive pastry chef in three-Michelin-starred The French Laundry, Chef Thomas Kelly’s Per Se, and Four Seasons Hotel in Tokyo.
Located just a stone’s throw away from KLCC at Ilham Tower, Sōfte’s (pronounced as soft with a strong emphasis on the t) interior offers a futuristic vibe with its neon-text scrolls and eye-catching posters that represent its core sundae offerings.
Sōfte offers soft serve, sundae and more
The vibe is futuristic, the service is friendly, and the servings are unique.
Sōfte offers a range of soft serve flavours from banana to chai to butter pecan and toasted rice, that can be paired with freshly-baked madeleines.
For those who can’t take dairy, Sōfte also offers vegan-friendly sundaes. During our two visits, they had pink guava (a staple), orange, green apple and papaya sorbets on the menu.
Be sure to enquire about the daily specials during your visit.
Tossing it up with the Sundaes
Sōfte’s main attractions include the specially-curated sundaes (RM27 for solo and RM39 to share).
Ones that stood out to us include Everything Rice– named so as every element in the sundae has a core ingredient derived from rice. The scoop inside is made from toasted rice, and topped with miso caramel, coconut mochi, puffed black rice and finished with black pepper.
The Salted Egg Sōfte features custard ice-cream with vanilla soft serve, and topped with shaved egg yolk. The dessert does not feature Asian salted egg per se, but the egg yolk is cured in salt for a similar result.
The Kek Batik ft. Chocolate Concierge is a homage to the Malaysian dessert with a double-choc ice-cream, brownie cookies and milk jam.
Come for the soft serve, stay for the madeleines
The madeleines here are all the rage – and we can see why.
Sōfte offers Freshly-Baked Madeleines (RM39) paired with soft-serve of your choice.
These delectable morsels were the main reason we returned to Sōfte twice in one week.
Baked fresh to order, the madeleines are served warm with a lovely crisp exterior, and irresistibly soft sponge-y centre.
A touch of Asia comes by the way of curry leaves in these madeleines. It might sound weird – but it works!
The madeleines are best paired with the banana soft serve – thoroughly infused with the ripest of bananas (we wager either raja or emas varietals) for a rich and creamy flavour.
We’ve also tried the madeleines with the dark chocolate soft serve (very dark, very nice) but these madeleines can just stand on their own, in our view.
Pink cow gets you moo-ving
The Pink Cow (RM27 for solo) is a lovely combo of pink guava sorbet, whose tanginess is balanced by dragon fruit puree and crushed meringue. We like that the chef has opted for whipped milk (vs. cream) which lent a lightness to the ensemble.
Orange sorbet with diced mango
On our second visit, we opted for the Orange Sorbet (RM27) served with diced mango and coconut cream. This was a refreshing treat, and we liked the touch of lime to bring it all together.
Summary
In a city full of ice-cream parlours, we really like Sōfte’s refreshing take on soft serve which features the culinary skills of Chef Boyles.
Sōfte may serve more plated desserts in the future, but the madeleines are enough to keep us coming back for more.
RECOMMENDED!
