Teow Chew Restaurant, Penang
[Non-halal] If you’re looking for excellent Teochew cuisine in Penang, you’ve got to check out Teow Chew Restaurant 潮州饭店 on Lebuh Mcnair.
The two meals here were some of our favourites this year, and we highly recommend this spot.
Teow Chew Restaurant 潮州饭店

Operated by a young couple since early 2024, Teow Chew Restaurant offers impeccable home-cooked Teochew dishes.

The husband-and-wife team consists of Rayson, who single-handedly cooks all the dishes here, while Cheryl helps in both taking orders and prepping the ingredients in the kitchen.

Given the tightly-run unit, Teow Chew Restaurant only offers a handful of tables, and we recommend making reservations to avoid disappointment.
Excellent Teochew Steamed Fish

We’ve eaten and cooked our fair share of Teochew-style steamed fish (see our recipe here) but Rayson’s iteration is the probably the best one we’ve ever had.
For those who know, it takes a lot of skills and experience the yield the ideal texture for a steamed fish, and the one here was impeccable.

For RM60, the pomfret was cooked to perfect doneness. But what made the dish excel was the addition of sour plum for that strong tangy kick, that was perfectly balanced with julienned ginger, tomatoes and mustard greens. A few cubes of pork lard gives a touch of fat to the dish.
This dish was exquisitely cooked with a balanced and appetising flavour profile.
Teochew Pork Cakes and Stir-Fry Clams

We also enjoyed the Teochew Pork Cakes (RM24) – which comprises three fried discs of pork patties that’s juicy on the inside and crispy on the outside. Cuts of chilli padi provided a spicy kick.

The Stir-Fry Leek with Clams (RM18) here is well-rendered as the meaty and fresh clams were nicely complemented by the gingery gravy and fragrant leek stems. The portion was also generous for the price.
Chives Beancurd and Stir-Fry Potato Pork
We enjoyed our first meal so much, that we came back the next day for lunch.

The Signature Kucaihua Beancurd (RM18) is a popular order here and we can see why. The homemade tofu cubes were fresh and perfectly fried for a crispy exterior. The chives were fragrant and adds a nice touch to the light savoury sauce.

The Stir-Fry Potato Pork (RM22) may rival the best home-cooked dishes at your aunt’s place, with its touch of wok hei and potato cubes that’s been pre-fried to yield a nice crunchy skin.

The Stir-Fry Kangkung (RM16) was cooked in perfect timing to retain its fresh crunch.
Conclusion
If you tire of char koay teow and Nyonya food in Penang, and what some wholesome Chinese cooking, this is the spot. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
