[Halal] Thaba Express is a place for great Mughal food, friendly faces and interesting stories.
We spotted this place in front of Seniman Kakao (see our review here) and decided to try it. The bright and colourful facade was so inviting.
It turned out to be a great discovery. First, the food was amazing.
Chicken briyani
Lamb briyani Mutton briyani
We ordered three briyani dishes – the Lamb, Chicken and Mutton (RM12-14 each). Rice was perfectly fragrant and fluffy. Among the three, we enjoyed the lamb the most. The meat was delicate and aromatic – having been cooked for hours with spices.
Palak paneer
The Palak Paneer (RM12) here is slightly different with a more prominent garlic taste (I love it!). It is on the spicier side but I really enjoy that the thicker gravy with some bite to it (opposed to being just mushy).
Chicken masala Pakora
Chicken Masala (RM12) is also very aromatic and onion-y. The Pakora (RM4) and Chapati (RM2) here are excellent too.
Huge drinks! Complimentary kheer
Drinks here are huuugeee (see picture for scale) – for the Mango Lassi is worth it for RM8. We even got a free dessert from the uncle! .We had a lovely chat with the friendly uncle.
Turns out Thaba Express used to operate in a bungalow as Thaba Village on Jalan Ulu Kelang before it was demolished to make way for a highway. My Ampang friend says it was quite an establishment – but we are happy that it found a new home here closer to our office.
Also, the uncle claims to have invented Ladies Night back when he was working at KL Hilton. How cool is that? Thaba Express turns out be an amazing, unexpected find, and we definitely recommend coming here.
