Tian Jin Onion Pancake 天津蔥抓餅
[Non-halal] Tian Jin Onion Pancake 天津蔥抓餅 in Taipei is one of our favourite spots for breakfast in Taipei.
We first discovered this stall when we stayed in an AirBnB in the Yong Kang street area on our 2019 Taipei trip.
Yong Kang Street is a lovely place to stay in (and visit) due to the many restaurants (including the original branch of Din Tai Fung) and trinket shops in the vicinity.
And Tian Jin Onion (or Scallion) Pancake was a regular spot for us to get breakfast (and snacks) and we made sure to revisit this stall again this year.

To be honest, we weren’t really impressed when we first ate the pancakes at Tian Jin.
It just reminded us of roti canai (or roti paratha) that we can eat back home, folded with some fillings such as ham and egg.
However, the pancakes slowly grew on us – and we started eating them almost every day during our 2019 Taipei trip.
Tian Jin’s special basil and egg scallion pancake
Tian Jin offers a few varieties of fillings for the scallion pancakes – from the basic with no filling (TWD 30 or USD1) to Corn and Egg (TWD50 or USD1.60) to one with everything (ham, cheese, egg, basil leaves – TWD60 or USD2)!
However, our favourite here has to be the Taiwanese Basil with Egg (TWD45 or USD1.50).
In fact, we loved this so much – that we developed an easy recipe for this using frozen roti paratha (see recipe here).
What we loved about this pancake is the fragrant Taiwanese basil leaves (which have sharper and spicier notes vs. the Thai or European varieties).
The basil leaves are folded in soft eggs and pancakes (flaky and crispy in all the right ways with cut scallion in the dough).
Make sure to eat with the sweet sauce and chili paste for mild heat and sweetness.
Pancake with everything in it!
If you’re looking for something more filling, the Everything (TWD60) pancake is very good too.
The gooey cheese just worked well with the ham – with the right amount of floral hits from the basil leaves and scallion.
