Towzen in KL
[Vegan] Hailing from Kyoto, Towzen is a Japanese eatery renowned for its vegan ramen. Its outlet in Menara Milenium, KL is the brand’s first location outside Japan. We were initially skeptical, but the food turned out surprisingly good.
Towzen in Damansara Heights
Towzen is located in Menara Milenium, Damansara Heights. The original ramen shop was founded in 2004 in Kyoto by chef Minoru Yonekawa.
As one of Japan’s longest-running vegan ramen establishments, Towzen upholds Yonekawa-san’s vision of “World Peace Ramen”. Every recipe here follows the 13th-century Buddhist tradition of shōjin ryōri—meaning it is entirely free of animal products and alliums (garlic and onion).
Towzen is especially known for its soy milk–based ramen, which delivers a hearty and creamy broth without any animal ingredients. Popular bowls here include Truffle Ramen, Yuzu Kosho Ramen, and Si Chuan Tan Tan Men.
Beyond noodles, Towzen also serves tofu-based Katsu and mushroom Karaage.
Truffle Ramen
Despite being dairy-free, the Truffle Ramen (RM35) features a broth that is rich and creamy. Towzen achieves this tonkotsu-like texture by slow-cooking soy milk with a touch of baking powder. The broth is then rested overnight and finished with dashi, soy sauce, and truffle.
We appreciate that Towzen uses just the right amount of truffle to avoid any jelak-ness. There’s no mock meat here—just a slice of tomato standing in for chashu, along with plenty of torched mushrooms that add a satisfying bite. The noodles are firm, chewy, and carry the flavours well.
Curry Katsu Don
For rice lovers, the Curry Katsu Don (RM30) is worth trying. It features firm tofu coated in a crispy katsu batter, served with a thick, comforting curry that packs a pleasant spicy kick.
We also enjoyed the Spinach with Mustard Dressing RM10). Another highlight is the Matcha Latte (RM18): rich, flavourful, and never diluted. It’s made with ceremonial-grade matcha and oat milk for a lush finish.
