[Non-halal] Don’t always believe the hype. Replacing what used to be Kayu Nasi Kandar a few years ago, Yan Wo Seafood is a new tai chow place in Aman Suria, Petaling Jaya.
Recently, we had the chance to try the food here. Although we arrived early at 6.30pm – the restaurant was already at 70% capacity, with a few tables booked for dinner.
After that, there was still a steady stream of people coming in. So, the food must be good right?
[Nov 2022: UPDATED post with our second visit to the restaurant. Read below]
Yan Wo Seafood in Aman Suria
We ordered the Homemade Tofu in Salted Egg Sauce (RM22 for small) and Chicken in Homemade Sauce (RM22 for small) – both signature dishes which seem very popular here.
Most tables have the tofu dish, and we even saw a few going out as food deliveries.
Yan Wo Seafood’s tofu dish was disappointing
The tofu dish was disappointing. While the tofu was fresh and had a nice silky texture, we found the gravy lacking in salted egg flavours. Compared to most salted egg tofu dishes, this has gravy with bits of minced meat. But what was more distressing is the amount of oil in the dish (see picture above).
Decent chicken dish
As for the Chicken dish, the portion was quite good for its price. The chicken pieces were deboned, battered, deep-fried, and then coated in thick caramelised sauce. Sweet, sticky and slightly sour-ish – the sauce reminded us of plum sauce with bits of crushed nuts. It was nice – but it did get a bit ‘jelak’ after awhile.
The stir-fry potato leaves dish was standard. Nothing much to comment here haha.
Overall, we thought the food was ok. Service was quick, but our experience was marred by the very greasy tofu dish. However, they do have a very extensive menu with a number of interesting seafood dishes.
Our second visit
A year later, we decided to give Yan Wo Seafood Restaurant another chance.
For our recent visit, we decided to order the Clams in Superior Soup (RM20), Chicken in Butter Pumpkin sauce (RM28), and Stir-fried Spinach (RM12).
We must say – the Clams in Superior Soup was enjoyable. The soup has a strong ginger taste with a generous amount of wine. The soup was finished with some goji berries, garlic and red chillies. The clams were fresh and we liked that there was no residual sand in the soup.
The Butter Pumpkin Chicken dish was also better than the signature chicken dish we had last year. The chicken pieces were of a decent size and coated in a lovely crispy batter. The gravy also had a good balance of butter and pumpkin flavours.
Finally, the stir-fried spinach was just average, as we found it a bit too oily.
Overall, this was a decent meal and markedly improved from our first experience.
