Achi Ayahdorai in PJ
[Pork-free] Achi Ayahdorai is a new spot for banana leaf rice (BLR) in Seapark PJ.
This spot is located just above The Ice Cream Bar, and on the same row as myBurgerLab’s first outlet.

This restaurant promises home-cooked Indian food goodness with recipes from the founder’s maternal side.
In fact, this restaurant is named after the founder’s grandma.

Achi Ayahdorai offers an array of Indian dishes – from Chicken Varuval to Mutton Keemal Masala and Claypot Briyani – but there’s also family favourites such as Nasi Minyak and Nasi Lemak.
But the star dish here has to be the Banana Leaf Rice set (RM12.90).
Banana Leaf Rice Set

The set comes with six types of curries, four vegetables, and your usual pickle, curd chillies, papadam and rasam.
But there are some interesting elements that set this BLR apart.

For one, the set is served with a kesari – which is a desert made from saffron, ghee and sugar.
Secondly – the standout vegetable here had to be the cabbage. Instead of the typical cabbage poriyal, the leafy vegetable was shredded and fried to a lovely crisp with spices that’s similar to fried snake gourd. This was our favourite.

The set also came with pineapple pachadi which gave a nice tangy hit to the ensemble.
We always love the option of parboiled (aka Indian) rice which is not only healthier vs. white rice, but it’s fluffier when cooked right.

We upgraded one of the set to Briyani rice for an additional RM8. The rice was indeed fluffy and flavourful – although the heat could be challenging for some.
Hurry hurry, drench the rice with curries

There’s six types of curries including the usual chicken, fish and mutton – but our favourites had to be the three dhals made with spinach, chickpeas and peanut, respectively.
These were so good with the rice – that we could just eat it as it was.
Mutton Varuval and Fried Tenggiri

The Mutton Varuval (RM15.90) here excelled with fork-tender goodness, and was packed with spicy flavours.

Sadly, the Fried Tenggiri (RM12.90) was served cold although the flavours were lovely. The owner was kind enough to apologise and take the item off our bill – so we were appreciative of that.
Conclusion
Overall, the BLR here was good and we particularly enjoyed the special fried cabbage and dhal curries. We’ll be back!
