[Pork-free] Don’t call me BB, unless you got Basket Break Bakehouse donuts in your hands.
Last weekend, we picked up some sourdough donuts from Basket Break Bakehouse (BBB).
Basket Break Bakehouse in Sec 17
BBB started as a home-based “IG-famous” business before they opened a brick-and-mortar shop in Dec last year.
The shop is located at the basement level of Seventeen Mall in Section 17, PJ.
With its bright yellow facade, the shop immediately caught our eyes along with its delectable offerings on display.
Basket Break Bakehouse offers “sourdonuts”
Helmed by baker Daphne Ng, BBB comes across as a “mom-and-pop” establishment, as it was only her (and we assume, her mom) operating the hole-in-the-wall store.
BBB’s main products are definitely its “sourdonuts” – offered in five distinct flavours when we were there.
As opposed to the fast-food donut franchises, all of the donuts here are made in small batches from scratch to allow sufficient time for fermentation and rise.
The doughnuts take about three days from mixing the starter to fermentation, before they are fried to their final fluffy and chewy form.
Fluffy sourdonuts
First impression counts – and we were impressed from the first bite.
The doughnuts were incredibly fluffy with wonderful pockets of air that gave them excellent puffiness. They were also adequately fried for a nice crisp texture but not overburnt or greasy.
Really good filling!
The second impression sealed the deal for us.
A primer: we don’t eat donuts often as we usually find them to be too sugary or sickeningly sweet. We found the ones here to be quite moderate or in aunty-speak “Not sweet – very nice!”.
Vanilla Bean Brûlée – the pièce de résistance
Among the four flavours we tried, the Vanilla Bean Brûlée Sourdough (RM10) was the pièce de résistance!
This flavour has a nice vanilla cream filling (made with organic vanilla bean) but the best part is the torched brûlée top. The sugar on top was exquisitely torched to yield a lovely caramelised and brittle crust that went with the soft pillowy donut.
Cinnamon Sugar
Our second favourite was the Cinnamon Sugar (RM7.50).
Deceptively simple with no filling, we really enjoyed the flaky sugar bits on top and liked that the cinnamon was not overpowering.
Our friend also enjoyed the Lemon Sourdough (RM9). Again, the filling had just the right amount of tanginess and the meringue on top was a nice touch.
The Pistachio Mascarpone Sourdough (RM11) was also pretty good. The cream filling was buttery with a light mascarpone flavour that’s well-balanced with pistachio accents.
Brown Butter Roll
Besides the donuts, we also liked the Brown Butter Roll (RM11). The sourdough brioche was soft, with cinnamon filling accentuated by dark chocolate bits. The brown butter glaze with cookie crumble on top gave it a nice added texture.
Verdict
We enjoyed the offerings as the ingredients worked well together with subtlety in flavours. The donuts were not one-dimensional or sickly sweet. The texture of the base fried bread was also sublime.
Overall, we were really pleased with BBB’s donuts. BBB is probably our go-to for now on if we want to belanja friends who enjoy donuts and not-so-sweet treats.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
PS: BBB rotates its flavours regularly, so these flavours might not be available when you visit them.
