Blue Reef Fish & Chips in TTDI
[Non-halal] For beer-battered fish and chips and other seafood delights, check out Blue Reef Fish & Chips in TTDI.
Located just next to Pasar Besar TTDI, Blue Reef sources some of the freshest local seafood produce from the local wet market daily to offer British fish & chips, seafood chowder and grilled fish on the menu.
Blue Reef Fish & Chips in TTDI
Opened for only five months, the team at Blue Reef originated from Penang with 15 years of experience.
According to the very friendly manager, Jeffrey (who is also a Penangite) – Blue Reef Fish & Chips has been operating for years in Straits Quay in Penang before the team decided to open a branch here in KL.
The service here is exceptional. The restaurant has a casual neighbourly vibe – and all of the staff were really knowledgeable and attentive.
Blue Reef offers local fresh fishes
The menu is also quite extensive.
We’re familiar with British fish & chips that feature non-Malaysian fishes such as cod and haddock that are native in the Pacific and Atlantic ocean.
Hence, we were pleasantly surprised that the team decided to use local fresh fishes such as tilapia, barramundi, snapper, and grouper.
To be sure, we’ve eaten fish and chips that featured cod/haddock at other local joints – but these tend to lose the natural sweetness that comes with freshly caught local fishes.
Aside from halibut and salmon (which are imported), Blue Reef sources the fish and other seafood from the wet market next door to ensure freshness.
A generous bowl of seafood chowder
We started our meal with a bowl of Blue Reef Seafood Chowder offered in two serving sizes – RM20 for an appetizer portion or RM40 as a meal.
For an appetizer, the bowl of seafood chowder was a bountiful catch of local fish fillet, prawns, mussels and calamari. The chowder was suitably creamy and hearty – and was more than enough to share between the two of us. The seafood was fresh too.
Aside from the chowder, Blue Reef also offers Farmed Mushroom Soup with Truffle Oil, salad and other light bites such as Fish Fingers and Breaded Calamari.
Traditional Beer-Battered Snapper
Blue Reef sticks to the British tradition by offering beef batter for its fish and chips but you can also opt for the breaded option.
Our Beer-Battered Snapper (RM41) was a delight. The snapper was sweet, juicy and moist – and the batter was flavourful and crispy.
The chips were no shoddy work either as it was properly seasoned with salt with a good crispy bite and a mellow centre.
We opted to add fried calamari for an extra RM15 – but we thought they were just decent.
Grilled barramundi vs. grouper
Unfortunately, our first order of the Pan-Grilled Grouper (RM45) was disappointing as we found it too dry and overcooked.
However, the staff were really generous and immediately offered to change the fish to barramundi.
The Barramundi (RM33) was perfect! The fish was grilled to perfection to yield a lovely tender texture and sweetness. Everything else on the plate such as the wedges and greens were delicious too.
We also appreciated the team’s kind gesture of offering us a Chocolate Brownie & Ice-cream (RM10) to end the meal. Made by the in-house pastry chef, the brownie was suitably moist and decadent.
Summary
We really enjoyed the beef-battered snapper and grilled barramundi here. The excellent service by Jeffrey and the team also more than offset the dry grouper (which happens sometimes when you deal with fresh produce, no slight to the kitchen at all).
We’ll gladly return again to try the seafood platter and pasta.
